so impressive especially as this was basically a time trial. so great to see her so happy after the race and celebrating with her teammates. this is a weight off her shoulders Im sure after years of expectations.
Ventura HS's Sadie Engelhardt runs 4:31.25 at the Mt. SAC Relays to break the US high school outdoor mile record. She broke Katelyn Tuohy's old record of 4:33...
With all the flaws, high school records are still just great fun for fans. Most are held by legends and are generally pretty amazing to see in person. The difference between the star and the rest of a supposed championship field is often staggering.
Obea Moore, Michael Granville, Alan Webb, Candy Young, Renaldo Nehemiah, Mary Decker, Michael Carter, Jeff Demps, Kim Gallagher, Jim Ryun, Prefontaine, German Fernandez, Mary Cain and many others have all held high school records.
Congrats to Engelhardt! She is most deserving with about 20 mile results under 4:40 in past 3 years. Touhy for perspective had just the 1, but it was a good one at the national meet.
It's great to see records beaten at both HS and college levels.

@1:25, why did the announcer say “4:35 is the high school national record set back in 1982”? I guess some were mistaken on who owned what record??
Probably some old material laying around the press box. The 1982 time was by Plumer and was the record that Touhy broke. That 4:35 could also still be (or was) a California record.
Impressive. She looked like she was dragging a bit on that last lap but hung on.
Im sure dueling with Lauren Gregory would have helped her in that last 150 like it did at The Ten. It was probably that race that gave her the confidence to do this. at least subconsciously. shes spent several years spinning her wheels against essentially no competition running just above the record. then she has that great race against pros and then comes here and demolishes the record, skipping straight past 4:32! sub 4:30 next I imagine.

She had a year of plateau her sophomore year dealing with illness.

In a race with better pacing (and pacers for her) she should go faster. Congrats to her. Hopefully things go well for her in the future. They do say records are meant to be broken.
What is so impressive about Sadie's performance is that it was done in a HS only competition. Some of the other fast mile times already mentioned (Plumer, Cain, etc.) were done in pro races with lots of competition and with people to chase. This was a solo effort with no competition anywhere close to her, no pacer, no pacing lights). Outstanding performance by a wonderful young lady.

Wiley's famous 4:26 was done at an all comers meets with her coach pacing. The rest of the field included an elderly couple and a little kid on a tricycle.
