Have entries been released for Drake?
No
They’ll be released at 8am tomorrow.
When can we expect to see the heat sheets that were supposed to be posted last night?
Not ideal weather yet again. Wind of 15-20mph every day, a little chilly for most of it and rainy for some of it. Drake Relays are a shell of what they used to be, I think they started going downhill around 2013. College and pro runners need qualifying times, can't burn a weekend at the end of April in crappy weather. It's still a big deal for the high school athletes but that's about it. I don't think there's any way to turn it around. You can't fix the weather, and you can't host it later in the summer and have any reasonable turnout.
Born in a blizzard in 1910, there were just 100 spectators and 82 athletes.
They've been through good and bad times. World Records to Lightning Delays and COVID.
They will survive but with the current NCAA schedule having Regional meet qualifying, we may never see Stanford line up with Georgia here again.
Favorite memories? Steve Scott's final lap of the historic first sub 4 on Iowa dirt. The stretch of years where I got my first sunburn of the season, Little UNI with 4 native Iowans competing well with Missouri, Stanford, Baylor in the 4 x 8 and running 7:19, Mel Lattany and Calvin Smith, SO Illinois running 3:00 4 x 4 after Wayland Baptist broke the college div record at 3:03. Merlene Ottey, Randy Wilson vs Mike Boit, Gwen Torrence, Lillie Leatherwood etc... Bob Verbeek pointing to the crowd on his way down the home stretch of the 4 x mile relay. Vern Iwancin completing the Grand Slam for Drake in the Steeple chase followed by a victory in the 1500 by teammate Chris Mares. Crowd went absolutely nuts! The parade of officials on a sunny day. The old man hall of fame coach that finished his address to the 18000 in attendance "When I die and go to Heaven, and I KNOW I WILL, I sure hope it looks like the Drake Relays!!!
Just to name a few...
It is dead. Money will dry up which will decrease pro participation. College is almost a D3 meet. Iowa and Iowa State are sending JV teams.
Money won't dry up. They fill the stadium with families of high school kids. They realized spending money on pros doesn't put any more butts in the seats. I get in free and I'm not going because there isn't anyone going to be there that's worth braving the cold and wind to watch.
Money decreases every year. Track fans used to buy tickets to watch pros and college. Embarrassing that the pro races are the least watched. I predict a 2 day event in the future.
