hah--i'm a 56 y/o coach, so i didn't race. but pretty sure i could beat coach bob in a footrace, but i'd probably have my hands full against his son ;) . congrats on your first sub-5--i remember my first very well, 42 years ago...
I ran 5:12 off the couch in gym class as a freshman about 40 years ago and thought maybe I coulda been somebody if I had focused on track rather than every other sport. I guess not.
Jesuit are good and I agree they have a bright future. Does anyone know how big of a team they have? I've got 14 on my boys roster who are under 5 and 2 more knocking at the door with just north of 5 by a second or two, but I only have 22 boys on my entire roster.
Rocky Mountain currently has 25. 49 boys have run the 1600m for them so far this spring. 10 are seniors. 6 returners (out of 13) are sub 4:45, 7 guys between 4:50 and 4:59. This gets a lot of hype at times, but the number of kids out is huge.
Boise High has 13, of which only 2 are seniors. 7 guys sub 4:45, 5 of which are returners. They have had 30 boys run it this spring. They did have a senior boy that should have been a 2:00/4:30/10:00 type kid that didn't show up this spring.
Mountain View in Meridian has 12 out of 25 that have broken 5. 4 are seniors. 6 guys sub 4:45 (all sub 4:35), 2 of which are seniors. They have a 2:00 boy that hasn't run a 1600 this spring.
Similar percentages across all three programs, which have historically been strong programs in the valley. They also all run the 1600 frequently. Roughly 50% breaking 5, roughly 25-30% breaking 4:45.
i was at at the trabuco hills distance carnival in orange county last night and the announcer mentioned that trabuco had the record last year for most sub-5s in the nation (31 according to athletic.net, but they don't register any others that may be hand-times at dual meets). not sure how to verify if that's the most; they currently have 28 this season. for reference, though: great oak had 42 in 2019...
Yo I was there too how'd you do? I got 4:57 in the 1600

Cool where do you coach? Coach Bob is amazing he has really helped me become a better runner (yes I go to Redondo)

century h.s., with only 5 sub-5s. bob's a great coach--i've known him since the 80s while i was at ucla, and our wives are good friends who both ran for the janes, a local all-female running club. now promise me you'll say hi to coach bob for me, and promise both him and me that you'll also spend less time on these boards...
4 freshmen (2 are 16 years old), 5 sophomores (at least one is 17 years old), 8 juniors (one being already 18).
The two freshman that are 16 have run 4:47 and 4:50. Less impressive when you realize they are the same age as sophomore boys. Their 4:36/9:56 freshman from last year should have been a sophomore. Solid for a sophomore vs. great for a freshman.
