Hi guys,
Apologies for the info overload. I'm a 32YO male and would really appreciate some advice on what pace to aim for for my upcoming Marathon at Manchester UK (flat course).
For context my running background isn’t consistent. Left the military in 2014 when we used to run maybe 2/3 times per week but usually around 3-6 miles max at best efforts, rarely ran off my own back but best efforts I can remember were 1.5 miler in 8:02 and around a 17:30 3miler.
Began running again about a year and a half ago, did my local HM (quite hilly) in 1:31:xx off of 5 weeks running 3x per week, basically just did a long run up to 10miles, 10k and 5k once a week.
Took a break and then did 8 weeks last minute training again for Manchester marathon last year and ran a 3:09:22 (ran 26.5 miles total) but held 6:52 average for 18 miles then the wheels came off and dropped to around 7:45ish. This again was training off 3 days per week and I really only did 3 long runs over 18miles.
I raced my local half again last October, 12wk training block but was at the rugby World Cup in France and got ill on return close to the race so missed around 2 weeks of good training. But managed a 1:26:55, again on 3 days per week (80/20 advanced HM plan without the easy runs, usually LR, intervals, tempo).
This training block again has been interrupted as I’ve had a baby. I got 5 wks base build in before Christmas, 5 wks no running due to the baby and will be going into the marathon with a further 8 weeks training (13 total). I was hoping to break 3hrs which I am currently confident of as my overall milage is much higher than previous.
I have been doing Matt Fitzgerald's advanced 80/20 plan however ignoring the easy days and doing the workouts which are usually long run, interval type, tempo type and warm ups/cool downs again for 3 days per week. This week I ran the 16 mile marathon pace test he advises (I did 1.5 mile to warm up, 3 mile to cool down) and managed to hold a pace of 6:33 per mile average and felt very comfortable until the last mile or so.
With the race being in 3 weeks time my question is this. Should I aim for a 6:35 per mile pace or do you think I could hold a 6:30 pace and get a faster time? I average around 35-40 miles per week and have completed many more long runs this block than previously but I’m wondering whether lack of volume is going to be an issue in the last part of the race? I would hate to blow up and miss my first sub 3 but I also feel the 6:52 pace would be slower than I can manage.
Any advice would be appreciated. I am also aware that I need to pump up my volume which I intend to do with a JD 2Q plan for my next marathon but I’ll likely only move to 4 days per week and a volume of 55pmw max due to shift work and terrible roster patterns I get given.
