Marathon history: 2015 - 3:24 on 40 mpw (3:05 major blow up); 2017 - 3:08 on 50 mpw(sub 3 blow up
After two failures at the marathon, I decided to train for shorter distances and eventually try the marathon again after building up. Most of my training in the past few years has been following Daniels plans/principles. PB in the 5k of 16:30 (2019) and 1:17 in the half on 60 mpw (2021). After taking 4 months off last year due to osteitis pubis, I decided to target an April 2024 marathon. Ran a half in November 2023 in 1:18:56 after a few months of 40 mpw and a few specific workouts. Since then, I started the 41-55 plan in Daniels 3rd edition and stuck to the workouts pretty closely, except making the longer runs a harder effort. Mileage has been right at 70 mpw since after the half. Easy pace ranges from 7:30-8:30. Here are some of the workouts I’ve had recently:
- 20 @ 6:53 avg
- 16 w/ 12 @ 6:20
- 22 @ 6:49
- 16 - 2 w/u, 8 @ 6:14, 3x1 @ 5:56 w/1 min rest
- 17 w/14 @ 6:13
- 17 – 2 w/u, 3 @ 5:50, 8 easy, 2 @ 5:45
- 22 @ 6:40
I’m cautious about what my goal should be, given my only two attempts ended with blowing up/cramping. I’ve been using Daniels’ M pace of 6:15 for my training but I doubt that in a real race. What’s realistic? 2:50? Or should I go for 2:45?
