While some PS2 era games are still playable, games have certainly evolved in terms of graphics, gameplay (so much more is possible now), and storytelling. Retro games and games inspired by the games of yesteryear are a big thing today though. Ultimately video games are about having fun and killing some time between runs, so play what you like. Compare the PS2 god of war games to the PS4/5 god of war games to see how games have evolved.
Games peaked back when PS2/Xbox/GameCube were big in the early to mid 2000s. Devs with a few decades of experience delivered the first consistent set of truly great 3D games (lets be real, PS1/N64 were a dry run and lots of those games are clunky, even the ones you liked as a kid) as well as there still being a steady trickle of 2d titles. The new consoles had graphic and sound capabilities that offered a new level of presentation, but not enough for you to not realize they were games. Due to this devs still had to make sure the gameplay was fun since they sure as sh*t weren't going to be sell on realism.
All of this and then most importantly games couldn't be patched or have season passes so you typically got the full package on the disc (barring some expanded re releases). No annoying trickling of content, just wall to wall solid releases as long as you weren't an idiot and bought movie tie in games.
On the contrary, single player RPGs and shooters are a fading memory of the 90s and early 00's. What became possible in the late 00's - MMO shooters and rpg's - destroyed everything good.
There will never, ever again be games like Final Fantasy VII, or well-balanced RTS like Warcraft 2. Yes, these titles constantly have new iterations, but they suck and only show that the creativity is gone.

what's really over the shark is modern warfare using AI to ban people for using mean language while they pretend to kill each other.
Ironic that someone would post this in a year with major releases... Dead Space Remake, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Diablo IV, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Street Fighter 6, Armored Core 6, Final Fantasy 16, Starfield, etc.
I got back into gaming about a year ago. My last console prior to my Xbox now was the GameCube. Game design and production value has improved MASSIVELY over the past 20 plus years. To illustrate this, go back and play Resident Evil 2 on the PlayStation and then go play the remake they did a few years ago. It's a night and day experience. It's also a considerably more diverse industry... In terms of the offerings and the customer base. If you say gaming sucks now, you're playing the wrong games, there's something for literally any person who likes gaming.
honestly there are too many amazing games to list.
Why are your PS5 examples a PS4 title and a mid action game? Guess the console isn't worth it? The only thing I've really been playing recently is Street Fighter 6. I guess I'm looking forward to Under Night 2 next year.

Are you joking? There will literally be another game like Final Fantasy VII. Yes, the recent mainline releases in the Final Fantasy series have been duds, but Final Fantasy VII Remake was not. That game is on par with the original, just updated to modern sensibilities with it being made into 3 games to expand the story.
Also the single player rpg is in a sort of renaissance right now. This year Baldur's Gate 3 and Starfield both recently released. In the past few years there have been Disco Elysium, Pillars of Eternity 2, Divinity Original Sin 2. If Crpg isn't your thing, last year Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West released.
If retro rpgs are your thing Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars both recently came out and were inspired by super nintendo rpgs.
Knights of the Old Republic is getting a remake.
I could name like 5 more games expected to be published next year. Between work, running, and the slightest semblance of a social life, I have time to play maybe 10% of the good games that have been coming out in recent years. Your argument is so 2016.

PS4 is still fine if you play games just for the story. I got suckered into buying one for FF16 and ya, mid action game is fairly accurate. It even has a character named Mid.
Own all the Tecmo games, really is amazing how that is done. Will be playing tonight,
I had Tecmo Super Bowl and some tecmo game on gameboy. Then at some point my dad got Madden. Playing madden with friends on super nintendo was how I spent many hours as a kid.
Anyone in this thread ever speak to an actual real-life female?*
*Mom doesn’t count in either real life or fantasy scenarios!
Since Baldur's Gate is big right now: You'll meet more women at ttrpg meetups than you will get dates from using tinder, statistically speaking - try it. Its the losers who think they're too cool for stuff who only talk to their mom.

I think you're just being nostalgic. Games are definitely 'better' now. Graphics are way better, the maps/worlds are way larger. Stories are just as good or better. The list goes on.
