It’s inconceivable that, after decades of marathoners chasing the 2 hour barrier, we might see it first broken officially by TWO PEOPLE in the very same race. This is going to be one of the greatest marathons ever. Predictions?
I find it hard to imagine any situation where Kipchoge could beat Kiptum. Kipchoge’s kick is pretty clearly worse and Kiptum is at least as strong as him. The only way I could see him winning is if Kiptum fades in the second half, but I think the most likely outcome is that Kiptum drops Kipchoge with 5-10k to go.
Kipchoge just announced he’s doing Berlin and so I think people are assuming Kiptum is in too. In my quick search I can’t find anything official about Kiptum.
Why don’t you call his agent, Robert?

If Kipchoge is in Berlin, Kiptum in Valencia and Chebet in NY it’s truly a lost opportunity for the sport. At least Kiptum and Kipchoge should square off on the same course at the same time. Running dueling and separate time trials is depressing to me.

Cheptegei is going to Valencia. I assume Kiptum will now come to Chicago.

Wow, that’s sad. So now we have three dueling time trials. I get that’s is all about the $ and all about running for a super fast time without worrying too much about losing the race, but it would be a far more satisfying conclusion if Kiptum broke the wr on the same course as Kipchoge and defeated him in the process, or if he blew up trying and lost to him. That’s real drama. A wr is a wr, but still. Maybe it will be 100 degrees in Chicago. What a waste!!

This is why dominating the marathon has never been as impressive to me as the track. How often do the top runners ever compete against each other in the Marathon? At least on the track we know the top guys are all gonna be in the same race at Worlds/Olympics, you don't even get that in the Marathon with people chasing times/paydays instead of championships.
He certainly seems to care more about the record than trying to win all the majors. Maybe after Boston he realizes he has no chance against Chebet on a hilly course in an unpaced race, so back to what he does best.

Kipchoge has run faster and he did it with positive splits. With better pacing Kip would have run sub 2.01 in his WR race.
True, but Kiptum's 2:01:25 was in London (harder course) in the rain (bruh) with 61:40/59:45 splits. Kipchoge's race was Berlin in good conditions with 59:51/61:18 splits. I prefer Kipchoge because that 59:51 first half was mindblowing to see in a real race, but I think Kiptum's performance was the better one.
I'm hoping Kipchoge is going into this with something to prove after a disappointing Boston and a new youngster on the block putting up a serious challenge. If they're both in shape, this could very well be the greatest marathon ever (assuming Kiptum is actually racing).

Why would people assume that? What a terrible thread title.

I understand why Kiptum and Kipchoge would skip NY this year and assume Chebet will be back there (though you’d think he might want to see if he can run faster than 2:03 now given his recent accomplishments), but if it is true that EK and KK are not squaring off in the same race this fall is inexcusable. It’s really lame, though I’m not sure who is to blame!
