It's interesting that CIF left it up to each individual section as to how their teams should qualify. No other even is like that, and I'm sure there will be some complaints. I have a former colleague still coaching, so I'll have to ask him for what he hears out of the post season and pre season meetings for his league.
Four legs for a relay team cocks things up when greedy coaches dump athletes in one more event. Also look for the 4 x 8 to be an event dominated by the big schools.
Bad idea. It's overextending the athletes on meet day and watering down competition. Most schools can barely field complete teams and most coaches are morans.
* 800m performance is more strongly correlated to 400m performance than 1500m performance. More California 400m athletes will try 800m. * California HS T&F coaches will feel less of a need to move their best 800m athletes up to 1500m or 1600m since the best 800m athletes can help their HS team: 4x800m, 800m & 4x400m. * If California shortens XC to 3K, CA may be onto something.
We have 4x800 in NJ, things are still pretty fast in the 800 and we get some kids who wouldn't go to MOC's individually making it into the 4x800 at state, it's a good addition.
Question: how can we make an 8 hour meet 10 hours?
From my understanding the state meet won't have prelims for it - the 4x800 will be on day 1 in-between the 200 and 4x400, where the 3200 is the next day.

This is what would/should happen in Texas if we ever got the brains to introduce the 4x800. Summer Creek, always a strong 4x400 team, typically churns out very good 800m runners. I would love for Texas to follow suit.
Of the 51 high school state track meets (includes DC), 46 now run the 4x800.

uhh.. would rather it be near the end of the meet. oh well. not my state.
Will the 4 x 800 also start being run at dual/league championship meets, or is that up to the individual leagues or CIF sections? I'm glad to see it in any case. Around these parts, it's typically the first event in a dual meet and makes for a nice opener.

whats the standard event schedule in your state? in CA it goes 4x100, 1600, 110/100, 400, 100, 800, 300, 200, 3200, 4x400
By the way, speaking of Texas, California should do what they do in the relays and make them worth double points. Always thought that was a great idea honestly. Team title is about who has the best team, so relays, one of the most team-centric aspects of track should be worth more points.
Teams will have to qualify out of their section Masters' Meets. How they qualify for Masters is up to individual sections.
Good God No. Track meets are already too long, and we should be looking to **remove** an event, not add one. And certainly not add a long event. Just running one heat of the girls and then boys relays will add almost 30 minutes in total including time between races. Even if this race only starts at sectionals, southern section prelims is already an all day event. How are you going add multiple heats off this long race to the schedule?
I predict a few suicides from spectators bored beyond human comprehension. I might be one of them. Wow, this is awful news. Seems like a deliberate attempt to further make track meets only watchable by immediate family. OK, they already are that way, but that signals that something is already wrong, and this just makes it worse. Less events. Please.

You should probably stop going to track meets if it’s that bad.
To all the naysayers, its more opportunities for more kids to participate in a positive activity, find some success and be a part of an athletic program that doesnt cut or bottleneck after the sophomore year.
Maybe a school can find 6 good kids, maybe not. But it takes nothing away from a track meet and it is usually a very exciting event in competitive meets, especially state.
Sprinters actually like a few more minutes to recover between all of their boring, nonmemorable, seconds long events anyway.
Most schools wont waste their star distance kid for the sure open event points at a state meet unless the schedule allows it. Just makes the other guys step up and own it.
For the idiot that cracked about bad coaches, obviously you have never or are too dumb to learn from the good ones and just like to whine. You dont matter.

Yeah, for the most part I have. But then there is that dang "immediate family" clause. My son has tried use hypnosis on me, but that failed. Now he doesn't let me sit near the top of the stadium, or even let me eat using a plastic knife.
There's no 4x800 in the Olympics, World Championships, NCAA, Natys, etc. Stick to the format... Fine for invites along with other specialty relays; sprint medleys, distance medleys, 4x200, 4x1600.
