This is it.
In college coaching, recruiting ability is more important than actual coaching ability.
What makes a college coach "good" is recruiting. Recruit faster kids and you're a "good" college coach.
What makes a college coach "very good" is good recruiting, followed by sensible training to not screw up the fast kids you've successfully recruited.
On a side note, many college coaches have gotten super lazy. Not sure why. Some blame COVID hangover. I just got letters for 4 of my athletes yesterday. The small college would have been a good fit for any of the four. But it's late October! This small college is too late to the game. They've all been narrowing down their options all summer and fall. I doubt any of them even consider this school.
And no, it's not a new coach or coaching change delaying the process at this school. The coach has been there at least 10 years.
And then there are the totally insulting coaches who send a letter listing their "standards" which are truly outrageous. The kids can look guys up on milesplit. Not a guy on the current roster meets the advertised "standards."
Overall, college coaches are disappointing.
