Ah, that's a shame. It would be very interesting to throw some of the Ethiopians in there and maybe Ahmed, Knight, Fisher, Katir, etc.
In that case, Fisher would probably blow up being right on Cheptegei. I was thinking he'd be around 0.5s back per lap, which would put him around 12:45.
But isnt Hayward an awful track for distance? Isnt it called the windtunnel by some? Maybe i'm misremembering, perhaps im wrong because surely that cant be the case if Cheptegei is even entertaining the idea of attempting a WR on this track.
That may have changed since they built the new stadium, I don’t know.
I remember back in 2008 Bekele announced a 10k WR attempt at the Pre Classic—he came up 8 seconds short, running a swift 26:25.
I tend to believe that being able to focus solely on racing the clock benefits most of these guys in WR attempts, and I actually hope Cheptegei doesn’t have that luxury in this upcoming 5k. Even if he doesn’t lower the record, as another poster said this could result in a big rewrite of the toplist, which could be more fun as a fan.
Keep your eyes on Berihu Aregawi. I think there’s a chance he’s the next 5k WR-holder.
One more thing - I don’t think it got much attention, but Cheptegei ran a 26:49 road 10k in France 11 days ago.
Yes that is a shame that Fisher won't be able to run this. If he could latch onto a train going at near WR pace (and hold on for most of it), it could be one of the greatest US distance performances of all time.
It would result in Fisher struggling to break 27. Surely you can grasp this.
This could be a career defining moment for Cheptegei.
Even as a huge fan of the Ugandan duo, I remain skeptical of Chep's ability to match his peak form ever again, let alone surpass it. To do so would mean he has many years of dominance on the track left in him, and would place his records out of reach for at least a decade in my opinion. If Cheptegei manages to reach another level, 2021 may end up being the "off year" for him, which is crazy. His off year still yielded an olympic gold and a silver.

You're "skeptical" about the wrong things as it relates to Chep. Heck of an athlete, but can we please just allow these guys to openly juice and open the floodgates so we can stop tiptoeing around the fact that these guys are p!ssing nuclear?
I still think Cheptegei has a couple years of peak form -- I think he could go sub 12:30 and sub-26 before moving up. Whether or not the conditions will allow is another story.
Do we know who is pacing him and how far they're trying to go? I know the BTC guys are probably too elite to pace but it would be fun to have Kincaid, Fisher and Ahmed try to get Cheptegei through 3K @ 7:30. It would be a good test for Grant to see if he can nab Lagat's 3K AR..

It would be pretty strange for Fisher and Kincaid to pace a 5k the same evening they are also running a 10k.
Why is everyone so concerned about Fisher? I get that he is good, but there are more people than just him. It doesn't take much of a breakthrough race to get another person better than Fisher.
The majority of people on Letsrun are American, and Fisher is one of the best American runners ever, its not difficult to understand why people care about him.
