The current standards are fine. The debate will be after the trials. Certainly we won't have more qualifiers than a course can handle and committee can manage.
The 4 year Olympic cycle can easily catch an athlete making a training and health improvement falling off the trials or team. Leaving a margin in the OTQ times can make room for that. Making the times razor thin will make a silly race of 10 runners who may/may not be able to put forth their best effort that day. Interest from both the public and running community will drop as well. More runners don't make it a B.S. participation event either.
I suppose baseball was better when only the winner of the National League and the American League regular season advanced too. Not everyone can be happy.
