He had no better financial deals at mid majors. We are only paying about $20k total per year. That is similar to the schools that our 2nd son is considering.

I don't know what you are referring to.
I don't think 55-60 during the winter to scaling back to 30-40 is undertrained. Our high school team max out at around 40 mpw. That surely would provide a college coach with a lot more upside.

Yea it seems it is pretty tight at the moment. I coahc an athlete that has run 800 in 1:50.05 and 3:57 1500 but only a few schools interested. He will run a 3:40 1500 in 16 months in right program.
The 1:50 must have him as one of the fastest kids in the country. What kind of offers is he getting?

We are in Australia so yes a little tough. He has won numerous national medals. He has gone through an agency and slim pickings. Female I coac with 2:12/ 4:28 8/15 has had numerous schools interested but she won't be there till fall 2023.
Our traing group has a runner at princeton that ran 4:02 indoors in December....so we do OK.
A kid at our school ran 1:50/4:05 a year ahead of my oldest son. He got a 1/3 athletic scholarship on a top program.
Why did he choose Princeton rather than taking a scholarship?
This last point is key. Top P5 coaches are looking at potential and older brother is not helping younger brother’s case. Have 2 kids running at P5 programs. Older kid developed big time in college which was mentioned by coaches recruiting younger kid. Also speed and form generally translates. They need to pass the eye test if PRs are not a slam dunk.

Then you really screwed up. You probably turned down official visits at mid-majors to go visit Power 5 schools. Mid majors will fight hard to recruit athletes in those ranges but you need to show interest. You need to be responsive to their messages. But if you act like you are too good for them (which it sounds like you have done), then they'll tell you to shove off.
I don't think so. Some teammates and other friends from the state went the mid major route but all are paying more. One guy ran 4:14/9:12 as a junior and he is getting about 40% but still paying $30k. Some others got 25% but are paying $30-$40k. Seems that mid majors are slow because they are underfunded.
Having a son in 3rd year of college who has friends across the conference and who has hosted a bunch of recruits, he has a pretty good idea of what colleges are offering. And having another son going through the process who knows many other people going through it in parallel, we have access to what dozens of kids have received or are being offered now.

Good that you are armed with this information. What kind of 800 / 1600 times would be required to get 100% at a P5 or mid major, or are they not being given at all. Appreciate your input
Completely depends at the school.
Notre Dame is in the ACC and you could walk on with a 4:10 mile. A 4:10 mile might get you a full or nearly full at Kansas state.
If you’re looking to get a full scholarship at the top running universities you’re going to have to run 1:50/4:04 ish
It is tougher than most think. So many kids get need based discounts and merit aid that the numbers thrown around are always inflated in terms of athletic scholarships. K-State is not giving a full ride for a 4:10 because 17 guys in the conference ran 3:48 or faster last year in the 1500. 14 guys broke 1:50. No coach is dumb enough to go that heavy on a kid who can get injured or may not improve. Eleven guys ran 3:44 of faster in the conference. If the 4:04 kid makes a bit of improvement, he still doesn't score at the conference meet. Of course coaches will want him but not at that cost. To get a very large scholarship in the range of say 75%, you need to be at the level of what would score in the conference immediately. To get a full ride would require times that are equivalent to the the top few in the conference. I think the example of 1:50/4:04 gets 30% at Notre Dame and gets 60% at K-State. Too many people think mid-majors pay more for lesser performance but it isn't really much different due to supply and demand. Mid-major programs are worse mainly due to the amount of scholarships that they have. Most are operating with 5-8 rather than 12.6.
Oho State puts no money into distance. Your boy can definitely walk on, but don't expext any cash, regardless of how fast he is or gets. Unfortunately, many Directors of T&F find that they get more bang for their buck by throwing money at sprinters and jumpers.
No. They haven't responded.
Definitely some good info here…. People hear that a kid got a full ride or 50% scholarship but don’t realize that that is including need based, academic and athletic aid. It’s important to understand that at most schools especially private schools not a single kid is paying full boat. A kid with a 4.0+ is likely getting a 25-50% academic aid and many schools and if their family is relatively poor that will get up to 70-75% (with need based and 4.0+) so even a 4.02 mile and 4.0 poor kid on a full scholarship could only be getting a 25% athletic scholarship.
A rich kid that runs 4.02 and has a 3.1 gpa may not get a full anywhere because at some schools that kid will only get a 10% academic scholarship so to pour almost an entire scholarship into that kid would be tough because even top fully funded teams may only have 5-8 distance scholarships (yes I know some places have more but you get the point). If a coach can spit up the 90% athletic aid they will get a dumb, rich, 4.02 kid they could possibly gone 3-4 smart poor 4.08-410 kids close to full scholarships.
The whole process is much more complicated than run X get X.
Wow. Pretty eye-opening and appreciate all the intel you've passed on in this thread. It was nothing like this when I was recruited back in the late 80s. No internet of course, but if you ran sub 4:20, had decent speed and range, and had the grades, you got a lot of looks. Most as a walk-on to very good schools but some modest offers from other schools too. I'm about to go through this process with 2 kids (girls - which I imagine is more generous b/c of Title 9?) and this thread is helpful. Bottom line: don't bank on athletic scholarship offers ever and choose the school that is the best fit for your kid (and hopefully your wallet).
I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. Sent an athlete to Div 2 school in 2014 and his times were 15:20 xc and 2:35 for 1k. He was a triathlete and he was given $8000 for first year and it went up each year until he was getting $13k for final year. The school took a chance but he was all conference and helped team make xc nats on 2016. Div 1 might not be the answer for everyone.
