Can you imagine holding yourself out as a lawyer and an expert on law, and then getting the basic standard 180 degrees wrong? That can't be anything but completely humiliating.
People react in different ways to public humiliation. Some flee the discussion/dispute. Intellectually and emotionally mature adults might do a mea culpa - admit an error was made, and recalibrate their thoughts and opinions. A relative minority of dysfunctional and maladapted adults try to deflect from their glaring errors by changing the topic (deflecting) and/or angrily lashing out and attacking others, especially attacking those who brought the error to light in the first place. Those people typically end up humiliating themselves further - they actually make the humiliating situation worse for themselves without realizing it.
