His form is looking excellent in this video. Compared to high school, I can't even tell that it's the same person. Props to Mike Smith for making it more efficient. Truly great to see.

He also went from crushing workouts in high school for no reason (8:03 3k supposed to be at 5k pace!) to being the most controlled of any of the NAU runners here. Definitely maturing as a runner and showing that in the race results.

I saw his NXN XC race; there was nothing wrong with his stride and it was a tremendous performance. He was talented then and he's talented now. There are other elite HS rumners that train just as hard as he did.

I think the main problem with Nicos form in high school wasn’t his stride, it was everything else. Everything going on with his upper body screamed inefficient. You’ll notice a huge difference if you look at the then vs now.

+1
Wouldn’t be a Letsrun thread if someone didn’t vehemently oppose even the most benign of statements.

I did not see anything wrong with his form either depending on his goals. It is an efficient form long distance; he looks like Bill Rogers and Frank Shorter.

The workout he did in High School that was 8:03 was a time trail. This was during a pandemic and seemed like animportant tool to move forward as they had no racing because of the lock downs.
Nico most likely got older and grew into his body more and got stronger. Nico's stride in High School was almost perfect. He just had a little upper body movement that will and did go away as he got older and stronger.
It's awesome to see him improving so much and continuing to do so well.

Wait, wait how can this be. Didn’t his HS coach burn him out. There is no way that he can improve, he has been burned out.
Once again the haters go home devistated and are done. Haha
I think NAU dues some heavy weight training. Heavy compound movements for the whole body. This helps to prevent injury but also helps form. Too many runners are not doing stuff like this. Thus why too many runners look like whacky wavy arm flailing inflatable tube men.
What weight training is NAU doing? Anybody have any insight?
I have to say I watched some of it but couldn't ascertain which one was the dude in question.
Young is a super efficient runner and can go all day. His arms are better now. One thing he is going to have to do is to get more of a forward lean, like Nur, because that form leaves you with limited change of speed when it comes time for the kick. He'll always be there because he can hold a very good pace, but the speed is where he'll struggle in bigger championships. Reminds me of Derrick.
I know in 2019 they switched from heavy lifting and compound lifting to just body weight and circuits. They may have gone back to one day of compound lifting like we used to but I doubt it.
I’m not a fan of his form right now. He is running so y’all and upright very inefficient. Needs to develop a forward lean.

Yea, starting watching it but looks long so I didn't finish it. Wouldn't have known who any of those guys were.
Funny start to the video: "Nau men have won four of the last 5 national championships. "(Dramatic pause)
"Their goal is to win again in 2021"
Really! You don't say!
Mike Smith is the Happy Days Fonz of XC. Spends half his time telling the team to cool it.
Nico just looks like he's caught up to his body, strength-wise, and is obviously in a program that works for him.
I'm no longer concerned his form is limiting his development, but I am worried about Coach Smith's voice. He sounds like Elizabeth Holmes.

You would know better than me. But even bodyweight stuff can be “heavy” lifting. Pull-ups are no joke as they’re your entire body weight. It seems like the biggest improvement is in Nicos upper body, so even just pull-ups and push-ups could bring a huge improvement there.
What are people bragging about? Nico looks stiff as a board. Straight up-down. Ugh, not good, I could see hip/glute issues in the future. No wonder Isai Rodriguez blew him out last week.
