When you get into running, you've never done it before and you think, "Wow i'm good because I'm working hard and my coach is giving me these workouts."
What you don't realize is lots of people are working hard and the workouts only matter so much. As you get older, you gradually start to realize how important talent is. Think about it, on a college team, tons of guys are running 70+ per week and doing the same workouts but only a few of them are stars.
I'm not saying coaching doesnt matter. It does. Particularly at high school where you can out train other teams. In college, it's very hard to out train other teams.
One of my favorite sayings is, "How many NCAA titles did Mark Wetmore win at Seton Hall?"
That doesn't mean Wetmore or Brosanan don't know how to coach - they clearly do.
