Been jogging for a couple months now and lurking on here for a few weeks. Trying to get into decent shape and at least run 5km in 19:XX before I'm an old man
Age:28
Height/Weight: 170cm/87kg
History: Hobby jogger in my mid teens. Ran with the XC lads after school sometimes but had other interests and didn't race. Did a handful of fun run road races back then with bad times (21-22min?) but enjoyed the trail running and camraderie. Weighted like 60kg at the time aswell..
Been around 10 years since I was jogging regularly. Put on some muscles and got fat. Smoker for most of those years.
I thought cause "I don't look fat" and cause I could squat a decent amount that it wouldn't be too bad getting into running. Was dead wrong and it took weeks for my shins to stop acting up after the first few minutes on the track.
Been about a month since the shins stopped acting up jogging 3-5x weekly. Just been slogging through 1hr jogs and trying to go a bit further each day. Last week I broke 6 miles in the hour (yes I know, BLISTERINGLY FAST) and around 29 minutes for the first 5km of that hour. Not sure what a real "race" pace would be right now
This week I'm doing intervals around 8-9 minute mile pace for 400, 600, 800, 600, 400. It's at the point where I'm so slow that there's no real set plan going into things and just taking it based on how I feel after each interval.
Wondering if anyone here has advice for someone starting out ? I'm starting to feel stronger ,especially compared to those first few weeks, so I want to make the most of it. Most of the runs have been on the treadmill so far, cause Ifigured it would be easier on the shins for now and easier to track progress. It does make it harder to push yourself though. I'm thinking of switching to the track just for intervals or harder runs then sticking to treadmill for everything else.
