End game is actually very simple and compared to many of the challenges that have faced humankind, fairly easy.
We currently need to keep transmission as low as humanly possible to defeat the spread of the highly contagious variants and to stop an escape variant from emerging. That means no indoor dining/bars, mask wearing and other social distancing measures. This will need to happen for the next 3-4 months depending on how fast vaccines get distributed.
We need mass vaccination to happen as fast as possible and we need 70-90% vaccinated.
If we beat out the variants and keep an escape variant from emerging, we will see COVID cases evaporate over the summer.
The last step is the fall. Kids will return to school and many will not be vaccinated until we get closer to winter. People with kids will need to do everything they can to keep their kids from getting infected. The same variant threat will be there in the fall. We do not want to get that far and then have kids circulate the virus, causing a new variant to emerge that escapes immunity.
We will also need to make sure the world gets vaccinated. Again, the threat is the escape variant. We need to be sure that we do not go all through this to have a variant emerge in a third world country unnecessarily because wealth countries refused to fund vaccination efforts.
If we get through all of the above, we will be able to return to normal. But there will still need to be mass testing and tracing to make sure no variant outbreak occurs. And there will need to be continued vaccine development in case boosters are needed. But by the fall, many restriction will be relaxed for those without kids and once everyone is vaccinated, it will be the end of the pandemic save and except for the possibility of a seasonal booster.
