The Letsrun podcast featured a talk with Jim leading up to this weekend’s 100k race in Az. Should be an interesting race and an ultra that a broader audience can follow. Races like Western States or UTMB have so much altitude gain and variability due to weather extremes that someone not following ultras might struggle to differentiate a great from good performance but a flat, road 100k is easier to comprehend. There were two interesting training insights for me (1)an important workout was 25 to 30 miles on the road at altitude at race pace (slightly sub 6), and (2) in May Jim added cycling and got a little carried away adding cycling to his 100mpw running - but “carried away” was 300mpw of cycling on top of 100mpw running - wow, a ton of aerobic volume! The important workout would be different probably for Western States but I’d never heard what a top ultra runner would do to get ready for a fast road ultra
I’ve always “bonked” in marathons. Better hydration, pacing, and fueling have pushed bonking from mile 18 to 24 but how can you not bonk running 5:50 pace for 6 plus hours?
