The problem is that other than making some people feel good there is really only a very minimal benefit to doing so when people are healthy. Considering that facial expression is a major part of human communication, it seems ridiculous that we demand people continue this for the long run when there is no evidence it is effectively doing much to slow viral spread. Yes, some masks block the virus, but that does not mean it is doing much to stop public spread. This is why they did not recommend this practice for the general public; because it is an ineffective measure.
