I don't see coronavirus having quite the expected impact in Kenya and Ethiopia simply because the population, and most importantly, the top athletes, are young and thin. Ethiopia has among the lowest percentage of overweight people in the world. Jakob Ingebrigtsen gets a lot of attention because he's world age group record holder at multiple ages, by a lot, because he's already been double European champion, because he ran 3:30 two years ago already and 3:30 again last year, because he already ran 4:50 flat this year, among the best of all time, because he's still just 19 until September, because he's been on a reality show with his family for the past 7 or 8 years, because he's the only European-born distance runner that is highly competitive at the world level, and because he nearly medaled at 1500 and 5000m last year just after his 19th birthday. The fact that he was just beat out for medals in both races at that age shows that he has a fantastic shot at a bunch of medals because he need not improve that much. His loss to GWet also showed that he already had far better than 13:02 ability in the 5000m last year. Indeed, why would a medal be unlikely when his brother, whom he's beaten repeatedly, has already medaled at World's?
