I think it's a great way for the 75% of viewers to get a real feel for how fast these guys are running.
Women run mile 9 in 5:20, fastest of the race so far. They come through in 50:09, which is 2:26:05 marathon pace.
Desi Linden is doing what she needs to do: upping the pace. Lead pack is stringing out with a couple women dropping off.

well, that didn't last long. Our buddy Bronson went about 4:50 for the first mile, and hung on 5:00 pace for apparently, close to a 1.25 miles (can't say for sure where he dropped) , and then they showed a long shot where you could see at least 200 meters behind leaders at 2 miles and he wasn't in view. Might have stopped and taken a break after his 3 minutes of fame. But did make it to 5k in 17:03. Let's see how it goes from there.

Depends on the individual race. There was an incident a few years ago about Kenyan non invitees running money eligible chip times and were denied due to their non invited status...depends on the race. No idea about Boston in particular. Something tells me various management agencies with which BAA/Hancock officials work are not huge fans of allowing non invitees to win moolah

Chigaco kept Wesley Korir out of the elites men field one year they had the men start early. He asked to start with the elite but they didn't let hum. He got in on his own and his time was the fourth fastest and they paid him the money.
Since then, every race has the men elite and open start at the same time. Pretty much every women that asks to start with the elite is allowed to, but they still use the option of making them pay their way. I've never seen a female Glenn Randall.
