The negative effects of heat go way beyond risk of dehydration. When it is warm, your body spends significant more energy to cool itself - or more precisely, to get rid of heat produced by running in this case. Among other things, you will send more of your blood supply to the surface of your skin to lose heat. That is cardiac output going towards cooling your body rather than to muscles to deliver oxygen so that you can run faster.

Uh... no one would consider Bakersfield to be the dividine line.... That's ridiculous. More like Fresno or around there.

You're right, tho, SLO would just be Central Coast. Wouldn't call that northern CA, probably, even if you're from SD.

I'm impressed. It was a warm day and her splits were fantastic. She ran 1:12:35 on the downhill first half and a 1:10:25 negative split on the hillier second half as it was warming up. People can point out it's a net downhill course, but she didn't really use it to her advantage.

Almost everyone I know had a terrible second half today, which tells me that weather was likely a factor. Well done.

Downhill courses are much faster, the only time you could have a slower time at Boston is in an extream heat that's it.

Downhill is always faster is just logic dude and is the same for a hobby jogger, weekend warrior or elite. Have your ever heard of gravity? and I know your reply downhill kills your quads yes it does a bit more than flat, but you gotta be stupid if you don't train downhills for a downhill race. Running for more than 2 hrs is gonna trash your muscles no matter what. So remember downhills always faster and I'm not adding tailwind. Try yourself just a 5k or whatever race in a downhill or hilly course then a week after go climb a mountain and run downhill same distance and even without competition you'll run a lot faster. It doesn't matter the distance a net downhill always wins.

Just to emphasize this: yes, dehydration isn't the only or (in most cases) the main reason heat slows you down. If you run in a heat chamber while drinking exactly as much as you sweat, or better yet hooked up to an IV that keeps your hydration perfectly stable, you'll still be far slower in the heat. In addition to the redistribution of blood flow, there may be central effects: once your body reaches a certain temperature, you'll be unable to continue. The interesting (and unanswered) question is exactly how/why that happens and which parts of your body matter most. In addition to core temperature, skin temperature and brain temperature also seem to matter, perhaps in different ways (e.g. skin temperature might influence sense of effort, while brain temperature might affect muscle activation).

Anyway, that's all speculation in terms of the mechanisms. But however it works, you can't eliminate the effects of heat simply by drinking.

The obvious answer here is that with no rabbits, the races are wide open (the way I like 'em). If someone goes fast, the race might be quick, if not, the opposite will occur. It's pretty straight forward.

Asterisk? Boston is a tough course no matter how you slice it. Previous runners have run much faster there, indicating (as usual with marathons) that conditions are a huge determinant in times. 2:23 is a super respectable time for that course on that day. No asterisk required.

What happened to the suspicion of Al Salz and all his athletes?

I hope that Hasay doesn't forgo the upcoming track season. The London World Championships this summer would be a great opportunity to lay down a fast 10K time, presuming she can make the team. The next two world meets in 2019 and 2020 will be in awful weather conditions for distance runners. The marathon training could put her at a new level on the track this year. She has plenty of time to run road races in the future.
