I agree that Al is an excellent coach but NOT for the marathon.
The sad part is that this board will fall for the same thing next time around. Mo in London was only a shock to those that have not been paying attention. This board will have all kinds of ridiculous predictions prior to Rupp's marathon debut and a lot of disappointed folks afterward.

Wheels were coming off from 20-25K already. Even a poorly coached talent like Luke shouldn't falter like that on a normal day. Something must have been wrong to start with.

That's beyond bad. 2:18 would have been a bad race.
But hey let's recognize that at least he had the balls to finish. Vaughn pussed out and DNF'd with 0.2mi to go so he wouldn't be in the results.
His finishing means that he had a larger appearance fee. If your appearance fee is over $20k they always have a 50% reduction for a dnf.
I read an article by Mitch Kastoff that Puskedra averaged 160mpw for the entire marathon cycle and topped out at 170mpw!
If he can manage that type of volume and get it right, he's going to pop a big time. That mileage is more than Vail managed and he's had a few cycles to get up to 130-150 a week.
I'd like to see him go back to Andy Powell as he ran his best under him, albeit the Kastoff article did say Powell wasn't used to coaching a pure 10k/half runner like puskedra so asked for advice from Salazar on occasions.
I still rate him more than most of the young American guys who've come out of college over the past few years other than Derrick.

Or, I don't know, since that didn't work for him maybe try a more conventional approach of less total miles and more miles near race pace?

Not true, you can qualify with other distances and I can guarantee one of his other road times has qualified him.

You are contradicting yourself. If he was already playing soccer then it wasn't from scratch. Soccer players do as much running as some high school/middle school xc teams.
Salazar didn't just notice his nice stride. He noticed that he was doing repeat 200s at 30 second pace. That is hardly scratch.
As I have already posted on this thread, Luke was injured for some time before this race. 2:28 on a limp is clearly not him at 100%.
He should have used a male pacer.

I love Renato's training principles MUCH more than Salazar's, but I do want to point out that Farah's debut wasn't a total flop. Sure, he ran minutes slower than he set out too, but that was partly because he pushed the pace too hard mid-race before having to jog home. A 2:08, especially for a debut marathon, is still a very respectable time. Even so, I don't think Farah is supposed to be a marathoner. I think Luke's time was "slow" because of the conditions that day. It was brutally windy, and his body isn't used to being able to push hard for the whole marathon (partly Salazar's fault), but still he needs more marathon experience (Farah too) to be able to finish out races better without fading badly in the last half. Not saying that Salazar is the best marathon coach, but their race performances weren't only because of Salazar's training principles.

luke is fine, started off too slow got caught behind the flow and when it was not going right, got caught in the wind, (there are no middle of the pack national level runners in the race - its super elites, then local stars)
two things happen in nyc - you get to 19 miles and are dead and feel like dropping but you cant drop out, because you are in FORT APACHE THE BRONX, THEN THE COURSE RUNS RIGHT THROUGH HARLEM and you are in jeopardy of losing appearance fees AND you have no idea how to get to the finish line or your hotel, and it isn't a safe place. . .
its happened to many elites.
waaaay safer to stay on the course than cut across Manhattan when you are from NOP farm fields.

I have a faster PR than Puskedra...maybe Nike will give me money
