Edna Kiplagat is a 2 time world champion, has won London, LA, New York and now Boston. She's one of the all time greats. Pretty sure Boston is a major marathon.

It truly amazes me how idiotic people are about injuries. They do this in every sport. An athlete can't just come back immediately when an injury occurs. Some have been building for years to get to the level they are. When an injury knocks them out for a while, you not only have to recover from the injury, you have to build back from what you lost. That can take a lot of time.

In Hasay's case, she was out about 6 months and it probably took 12-18 more months before she has gotten back in top form. There is no doubt in my mind that if the 10k trials were this year instead of last, she would have been right there to go to the Olympics. Just because she has run a marathon doesn't mean she won't be mixing it up at shorter distances and doing very well.

The 2011 times were so wind aided! I mean Desi Linden is a legit 2:25 marathoner , I get that the clock read 2:22:38 but that was crazy. Good race by Linden that day still super aided time

Boston is a bit unique in that every 10 years or so, they get crazy good weather and the course goes from slightly slower than berlin/london/chicago to being a couple mins faster. The field also tends to be a bit weaker than those events. They bring in the a couple of top runners every year but they don't have any depth.

How did you know today's race wasn't super-aided just like the 2011?

But, haven't you heard of Jordan Hasay?

The tail wind was not as perfect as it was in 2011 when it was a WSW wind that was consistently at 20 mph+ for a good part of the race. It was also 15-20 degrees warmer on the course this year. I would say the wind took 2-3 min off, but the heat added 4-5 for the women this year. Net 2-3 min slow. On a flat course with 45 deg temps, Hasay would have run 2:21 easily.

By all measures, it was an amazing debut considering that if you look at the list of best marathon debuts by US women, you will see runners who already had a lot of success on the tract. Hasay has struggled on the track. Most of the US women who have been around Hasay in terms of track talent have not been able to break 2:30 in the marathon. Hasay is overachieving if anything in the marathon.

She beat Desi easily, and Desi was likely in similar shape to 2011. America has a new marathon star.

Berlin is a major.

Her post race interview had me in tears. I'm very proud of her.
