New News Emerges Day After Spectacular World XC
*Ethiopian Men's Team Almost Didn't Run After Near Mutiny The team members said they'd boycott when it was announced that Mestawet Tufa (2nd in Ethiopian trials) wasn't running. The federation backed down but the whole scandal may have affected their performance as they didn't register a team score.
*Bekele Says Conditions Became Too Much To Handle: "Suddenly I felt that my coordination was not good and that my mind was dizzy. I even started to doubt about how many laps I still had to run...."I was slowing down and felt that I was losing control over my body as well as my mind. This is why I decided to stop the race."
*Sr Men: Bekele Is Defeated As Zersenay Tadesse Wins Eritrea First Gold Just as it looked as if Bekele would cruise it on in for his record 6th long course title, his lead instantly vanished and soon he was on the sidelines - a beaten man just some 800 meters from the finish. The Kenyan men dominated the team standings.
*Sr. Women: Lornah Kiplagat Wins Ind. Title As Ethiopia Spoils Kenyan Party
*Juniors: Kenyans Have Perfecct 1-2-3-4 Showing In Both Races
Bekele Is Defeated. Wejo has called to say that Bekele's quest for a record 6th long course title didn't happen, as on the last lap just after he took a lead that Wejo was certain enough was big enough to get the win, Bekele suddenly lost it, dropped back and quickly dropped out as the Kenyan crowd went wild. Olympic 10k bronze medallist Zersenay Tadesse won Eritrea's first individual title. Wejo said the Kenyan crowd was unreal as people were watching from the trees. The atmosphere was way, way crazier than Boulder apparently. He said the Kenyan crowd only seemed to care about two things - having a Kenyan in front in each race and seeing Bekele lose. He said they didn't really acknowledged ex-Kenyan Lornah Kiplagat who won the women's race. *Results here.
