would this happen to be Buffalo? I too had a 3rd place finish, did not want to wait hours for the awards so I left (long drive) I contacted the RD (who is dead now I believe) and he said my 3rd place trophy had been given to 4th place who had stuck around. I couldn't believe this guy accepted the trophy so I contacted him and he gave back the trophy to the RD (he lived local) and the RD then charged me $24.95 to ship it to me.

Not to mention the race was historically slow this year. The winner is almost always under 2:30 and the winning time this year would typically have been 6-8 place any other.
Yeah, I thought that was dramatic, but the dude is 39 so he will be an elite masters. And he did go out in 1:12 for the half and is sponsored by Hoka.
There's also the small ignorable fact that everyone may have run a 1/2 mile extra.
My question though is, is why anyone would want to run the Portland Marathon as an actual race? IS there any prize money? I assume not. Weak field. and it's got a reputation as a joke marathon like everything else that happens in portland

No, it wasn't Buffalo. I am hesitant to name the race because I don't want to start any trouble. I have no idea why 4th place would accept, but good to know I'm not the only one who has dealt with this (actually, that is troubling to know). At least the RD got back to you. I sent two emails, never heard a word and dropped it (until this thread).
Pretty hilarious.
The runners like the 2nd place guy weren't affected by the route detour so not everyone had to run an exta 1/2 mile.

Wrong. So wrong.
Not elite, sub-elite, or sub-sub-elite. Not even close. 6:00 pace is embarrassing. To then refer to yourself as elite means you don't understand how slow you are.
its embarrassing to run 6:00 pace in a marathon. Good to know.

Not for the runner, but for the race. It's embarrassing that a marathon in a major city (a known running mecca, no less) has a winning time of over 2:30. It indicates that anyone who knows better is intentionally staying away.

Um, yeah. Of the 200 men who ran the marathon trials this year, how many do you think would refer to themselves as an elite marathoner? Maybe five?
6:00 pace is so slooooowwwwww.
What a Steve Harvey move
Cost for an individual runner to register for Portland marathon is $130.
Lester Smith, (an attorney) has been race director for years. Check out this interview with Lester here:
This mess keeps getting worse! RD Les Smith is now saying to runners who ran an additional .5 to .7 miles in Old Town, to contact his office and he'll adjust their time.
The whole race from start to finish is a disaster!

Well thank you for pointing out what pace is and isn't slow and embarassing ass hole. I didn't know before.
I ran in a gran prix. Five races over the summer. I was in my 40's. I was in 3rd overall for points with one race remaining. The leader was a young guy about 25 years old. The leader didn't show for the last race. And that dq'd him. the director actually tried to argue that he "should win, because he was in first and just didn't show for one race..."
I beat the guy in second for the last two races and the race had to be called for me to get my first place overall award. They didn't want to send it because they were pissed that their own rules allowed someone else to win
I'm here to help.
Language matters. Words have meaning. Calling yourself elite at that speed is an affront to those who run 2:17 and have elite dreams.
It's the biggest running language faux pa. No contest.
*faux pas. Not trolling for a correction.

2:17 is soooooooooooo slow.
Definitely not "elite."
The article I read said a pacer took runners off the course. You would think that as a pacer, it would be a requirement to know the course.

First of all, that initial press release was wrong on every level, and in fact libelous, as it wrongly blamed a specific pace group for the course error. Second of all, the pacers' sole responsibility is to lead their pace group through the marathon at a specific pace. They are not running "Sherpas". Third, the pacers are volunteers, donating their time and energy to help out their fellow runners, and shouldn't be wrongly thrown under the bus by the race directors. Fourth, it's the responsibility of the race organization to provide a well-marked and well-staffed course.
