Heartbreaking for an athlete after she had gone through a ton to get back in medal contention for Rio. There was a great piece on her earlier this month where she talked about her comeback from the broken wrist and other injury issues.
"Pearson Says She "Retired In Her Mind" When She First Broke Her Wrist Last Year":
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/athletics/2016/06/04/i-hated-everything-about-the-world-olympic-champion-sally-pearso/We almost made this QOD: “Getting home from Italy and realising I wasn’t going to the World Championships [later that summer] I cried probably every morning for a week or two. I had a torn calf that was about 14cm long which actually caused me to get the wrist injury so I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t cut my food properly and the little things really got to me. To be honest when I first did my wrist, I retired in my head. I didn’t want to come back to the sport and hated everything about the world. I was just sick of getting injured. I felt like that for a while but then I felt myself getting unfit and losing strength so I started training again."
Anyway, this means a US medal sweep in Rio will be that much more likely as the top 5 in the world this year are all Americans.
