He was a stud in high school.
On Barnicle's twitter, he calls himself "the world's fastest stoner". It looks like he is involved in marijuana culture.

According to the article,
Barnicle ran his last race in april of 2014 after which he suffered his 4th stress fracture. Not wanting to risk further injury, he sought a new career. He's not a bad guy though, he's working to open the door for marijuana acceptance, realizing that its not as harmful as conservatives would have us believe.
Likely he qualified early in the qualification period and wanted to give it a go. And why shouldn't he, he put in all that hard work to get that far. Its not like in the track trials where that pregnant woman stole a spot from someone who would have laid it all on the line. Now, for what its worth, Barnicle can say he raced the Olympic Trials marathon, even if he was never going to be competitive, thats a suitable capstone to a career many letsrunners would be jealous of. I'd like to see an interview with Barnicle about his life post running career and his experience yesterday. Can any journalists make it happen?
The perseverance he showed should inspire everyone. Hobbyjoggers and elites alike should cheer this performance. Thanks to Chris!
Give me a break! Let's celebrate overindulgence, why don't we? Guy should have had the balls to say, no thanks. This is disrespectful of all those who did qualify, did the training and did run. You guys are wacko if you really think Barnicle is a credit to the sport. Cheer his performance....I assume you also adore Trump.
When he came through the turn at mile 7 i was stunned. "that's chris barnicle!!???"
Dude was in the pain cave from the get go, but toughed it out. Looked like Tom Hanks from Cast Away at 20 miles, hobbling through the finish straight for his last lap...
This thread should have way more posts. That "performance" was epic.
Awesome lol. When did he qualify? When did he stop training??
A true testament to how serious the USA is about drug testing
Can somebody get an interview with this guy? This has to be a great story.

I watched the interview, seems like an interesting guy. A stoner All American. Well done.
This is what's wrong with having a half qualifying standard that is not indicative of marathon performance.
He would have never had the resolve and fortitude to run a 2:22, but he gets to make a mockery of the sport after capitalizing on his 10K speed and getting a free ride.If you win a US championship on the track, then you are free to run the marathon trials but otherwise you've got to go the full 26.2.
Meanwhile you've got a bunch of hardworking local yokels who could have inspired young kids to get out there and run sitting at home.

He qualified within the rules and He did qualify! He has EVERY right to be there as much as 2:18 and 2:45 qualifiers, many of whom ran just as slow or dropped out!
Barnicle earned his spot.
I agree the greatest performances would be any of the top three and fourth place finishers, but Barnicle was great in a different way.
So it's ok for Rupp, but not for Barny? Wrong.
Would have been funny if he had been selected as one of the random draws for doping control.

Give me a break. This guy qualified with a 62 minute half, he wasn't somebody who barely squeaked in. Also, do you need reminded that the winner of this race qualified with a half?
How can you think this is positive for our sport? Complete mockery.

If this is what pot does for you, I'll stick to the occasional beer.
What a freaking loser. Anyone involved in the marijuana business is 100% tool.

Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
