Trying to ignore the merits of the estate tax, one way or the other, this petition demonstrates what is wrong with our current political system (and is an example of why the way a lot of Democratic tax proposals are presented bugs me).
I know this is a petition site an they are trying to make a quick point, but the main point for keeping the tax seems to be "it probably doesn't impact you" followed closely by, and related to this, "it only affects the wealthiest Americans."
How about telling me something about the merits of the estate tax? Why should I support it? Telling me it only affects 1 in 500 tax payers shouldn't be the main reason to keep it. We have a system where 99.8% of people don't pay the federal estate tax. What is the logic that it is "unfair" if the remaining 0.2% don't have to pay it?
I'm sure those in favor of this petition would support a lower minimum, so it affected more than 0.2%, and that point could have been brought out more. The Democrats seem to have the idea that any tax is a good one if it impacts someone that has more money than I do. The argument that it only impacts the wealthiest 0.2% shouldn't be a reason to keep a tax. It's a shame we can't focus on the merits of issues anymore and can only focus on the us versus them approach.
