Is it possible? How would one go about doing so?

I would suggest finding the individual qualifier box and just jumping in there. Most might not know the difference.
Jump in right after the gun. Or yes, individual qualifiers. Or just walk behind a random team after they get checked in.
Get yourself a bib that looks like the real thing or you will stick out like a sore thumb. Do not expect them to be amused. As a course monitor, I would probably try to have you pulled and possibly tossed in jail - yes, it probably is an offense, not sure if it is a felony, but the NCAA does not take such things lightly. Just think if you ran on to the field during play of the NCAA title game; you think they would just grin and send you back to your seat?
I paid my 5 bucks!!!
I should be able to jump in the race if I want to
Stupid , why would you even think of such a thing , there is a standard of excellence that athletes take pride in qualifying to compete in a event like this , its not your local turkey trot.
Clearly your not capable physically and more worrisome the attitude to cheat and deprive others of what they worked so hard to be part of. What a miserable , spineless human you are.
I banditted the olympics once, it was nbd.
We still have 3 charity slots open.
How much money is your buddies willing to "donate"?
Pull a Kip Litton and line up behind the start all covered up

Yeah, because you have the authority to do that. I am pretty sure that is a judge/state attorney's office's job. I kind of doubt any office will waste their time filing charges for this. Nice try though.
presumably you are not fast enough, so what's the point
Seawell?
I bandited the New England Champs JV race in 06. Poor decision. Race officials were not impressed at the finish. Fun time though. I crossed and was trying to get out of the chute when the official noticed me. He asked what I was doing and I said I bandited and ran away. No big deal but he wasnt happy.

LOL I love how you straigt up told him that you banditted the entire race.
You would probably have the same experience as someone in the race who false-started or was otherwise DQ'd. You would not want to represent your school. It would be difficult to represent another school and/or get a race #.
USATF XC nationals (club and winter) is an open race.
I did this one year, my team was slow but I was not bad. I missed individual qualification by one spot.
As someone said, just line up in the individual qualifier corral and no one says a thing.
I finished upper third.

My friend did this same exact thing at the same exact race in 2011. I was a senior and out of shape. He graduated the year before. He lined up with our team in the JV race wearing a team jersey. Ran the whole race with me and we had a great time chatting and he helped push me to my best race of the season. He turned off the course before the final straight away.
It's doable if you've ever run the race before because you should still have the old bib, credentials, etc. if you haven't you're going to look like a moron and get caught quickly.
I still have all my old stuff, I'll do this next year to expose how pathetic our sport is. As someone said, that couldn't happen in basketball or football. I also realize ill likely go to jail given my skin color.
That'd be the surest way to become "famous" in the running community for the wrong reasons.
As long as you have similar-looking bibs and a nice school uni, you could definitely do it. There are so many guys in the race and no fan or official knows every qualifier that you could easily get through the entire course and finish without getting noticed. Definitely, the most difficult aspect would be the start line, but still I think as long as you lined up behind the 3 individual athletes in the box, they wouldn't feel bothered by your presence. Lining up behind a team would be slightly more obvious as you wouldn't be sporting their colors and their #5-7 guys would probably notice your presence and be like "wtf?".
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
