Gebribeat
Anyone have splits of the 5000.... the announcers said Gebriwhet ran a couple fast laps to close the gap on the pacers in the middle of the race. Geb did much of the work to get this race under 13. I think he could have won it if he had let it become a tactical race.
I'd like to see ventolin^3's analysis of the race.
There was at least one 66s lap and a couple 64/65s. Since they closed in 54s, I'd say they could dip under 12:50 pretty easily in a well paced race.
Soi (just beat Farah in Eugene), was well back. So was Merga (challenged Bekele a bit in the 10 at Eugene), after Geb made the push to rejoin the pacers.
My boy Alamirew!!!
This shows sub-12:45 shape possibly. Mo better hope WCs is another hobbyjog or he will get dropped.
even paced till 3000m then slow down. 12:50 at best
with a 56 lap.
good to see. When he came on the scene with a 7:27/8 I thought he'd be a great one.

Are you sure it was even paced until the 3000m? There was a lot of pole vault, long jump, et al during the race. The pacers had probably a 3s lead early over Geb and the pack --> then a cut to field events. When they rejoined the 5000 (maybe at 2600m), they were saying that the Geb et al had caught back up to the pacers after a quick two laps.

Why do people think that Mo can't do 12:45 or so? The reason that he burns everyone on the kick is not because he is blazingly fast but because he has a whole lot left in the tank.
I'm not saying Mo is a lock but I'd consider him the favorite at both 5000 and 10000 off of any pace. The champ until proven otherwise.
King dethroned? Gebriwet is the king after winning two Diamond meets and beating Rupp indoors?
How about, the prince falters a bit after making the pace when the going got tough?
Gebhriwet showed he is beatable
Once Mo hits top form nobody has showed the ability to beat him in Moscow
haha Mo CANT EVEN BREAK 13 ANYMORE HAHA.

Actually you're right, the fact that he can win a moderately-paced 10,000 and a slow-paced 5000 in the Olympics, as well as fast-paced 5Ks/10Ks in 2011, shows he really is a champ at a wide range. I thought he was dead meat in the Olympics because of the slow paces because he pulled it off.
More accurately, he better hope the Ethiopians are peaking too early again this year. Right now I don't think he's in shape to match that.

I recorded the race and freeze framed to get the closing splits for Alamirew:-
53.5 last 400
26.2 last 200
12.9 last 100
Very impressive in a 12:55.

Don't count Hagos out just Gebhri-yet.
Everyone realizes that Alamirew was 3rd in the Pre Classic 5k right? Rupp, Ritz, Derrick are all probably in close to sub 13 shape in the right race right now.
Listen guys when you play poker its not wise to show your cards. I myself will wait for the world champs to say who is the best. But i like gebriwet, he is a good kid with alot of talent and drive. And to the haters if you watch him race you can see his age.

flattening-out splits is ungenerous & doesn't account for slow unenforced laps of 66+ when you shoud be going ~ 61.5
you are just flushing away a coupla secs+ from your eventual flattened-out time for each of those 66s laps
these 2 top guys i'd wager are in ~
51.2 / 1'47.8 ->
3'31.4
4'47.4
7'22.9
12'43.0
26'33.5
ignore the 10k - they aren't 10k guys ( that number is only if their 5k/3k training allowed them to run a "perfect" 10k off shorter event training - it woudn't )
they have some serious 1500 speed
( think komen of 3'29/12'39 shape simultaneously - they are currently just slightly inferior versions of komen )
they were all affected by a race last weekend and the
9h jet lag from PST to CET. In conjunction with an erratically
paced race, it points at 12:45 for Geb and Ala.
alameriew is peaking better than hagos. i think he is the real threat. but a good one two punch to challenge mo farah. i am going out on a limb and saying rupp will not factor in the 5000...
farah and soi will be in the mix.
