I'll say he runs 13:57.
I'll say he runs 13:57.
I wonder what an inflamed achilles will cost him in terms of confidence?
It's VERZBIKAS
ORLY?
44 minutes + 13:46
heard it was an easy win for him..
Luke Verbus finished 33rd!
how long is this course?
Seriously? You already think he's a better XC runner than Virgin? Settle down. Maybe senior year. Virgin is one the all-time best in this country.

ILers will say 5k. Or maybe even 3 miles.
Neither is correct. This course is prob more like 2.9.
He faded in the last mile and finished in 14:07. Took it out in like 4:18 and ran the entire race alone. It was pretty warm but the worst part was the wind was coming out of the south, which means it was in the runner's faces coming up the hill. Tough to deal with three times.
In the 2A race the kid who was leading was so cashed he started wobbling with about a 1/2 mile to go then while still leading the race about 300 m from the end just flat stopped and then started walking. Unreal. He finished 72nd.
My typo...first mile was in 4:28.

Results imply 3 miles but if that's right, there's insane depth.
It's not so much the crazy depth, it's that the course is really easy to run fast on. It's downhill for a lot of the course, and the uphills are slight enough and early enough that you're still juiced and not really feeling them. Those times, I believe, are very close to what'd you get if you ran this race on a track.
Actually, the hill - while slight - is run 3 times. First after about 1/2 mile, again at the 2 mile mark, and finally as the finishing stretch. The wind wasn't much of a factor by the time this race was run, but the temps had climbed pretty close to 70. He ran well, but with no one pushing him there was little chance of getting the record today.

senior year, when vrbekskzias is like what, 23?
The course is average as far as difficulty. I was at the Colorado state championship today, fast course. Packed dirt, with hardly a hill. Ran Detweiller plenty back in the day, I call it 3 and it has gradual uphill with gradual downhill (although hardly hills). Illinois has some amazing talent and is deep. Gary, Sage, Broe, Torres, Derrick; the list goes on and on with all the great runners that state churns out at any level!
Isn't Verbizkas from 'out of town'? Doesn't qualify as one of the boys from Illinois in my book...

Yeah, went I went by a bank about an hour after the race it said it was 74. Whether that was completely accurate is anybody's guess, but still. It was a crazy day since the last few weeks had been either windy, rainy, muddy, cold or a combination of all of them. The weather for sectionals last weekend was just awful. I was at St. Charles East and it was 42 at race time but the wind chill had to be in the 20s somewhere.
