So in 2016 when they were introduced the number went down. By your logic I'm assuming everyone wore the shoes backwards?

I believe that Kipchoge would be running just as fast in a well fitting pair of Pegasus shoes. Is it a coincidence that most/all of the records being set are by the WORLD'S BEST RUNNER's or that they happen to be NIKE athletes wearing Vaporflys??
I think they do make a difference. But to play devil's advocate. How do you explain the guy who just ran 26:24 on the roads wearing the standard Adidas flat?
The evidence is overwhelming that these shoes have a significant impact on performance (experimental evidence in the lab and large sets of empirical data as reported by the nytimes) Anyone trying to claim otherwise either owns them and is in denial or is a paid Nike shill!

I think you’ve got it backwards. The Nike shills ARE the ones tying to claim they have a significant advantage.

If you've seen the effect they've had on local running you wouldn't say that.
Unless you're just another one of those defenders that wears them yourself but won't accept your improvement has occurred because of the shoes.
I think people in local running have seen a benefit, especially those in the back of the pack. Despite the distances at 5k, I think people are finally starting to buy racing shoes. Rarely see people at 19 in racing flats. I'd guess the low weight of them is more beneficial to them than whatever improvement the shoe gives.
This 100%. Marketing gimmick- they got us all. You don’t need to spend 250 on a pair of shoes to run fast
Agreed completely.
It would be ignorant and incorrect to suggest that the Vaporflys or alphaflys or whatever the hell don’t help. They do. Brojos along with half the posters on this site seem to think these shoes are like legal EPO.
If they engineered bike tires that could improve your biking efficiency (bare with me on the terms I’m no biker) by 4%, every single person in the Tour de France would be using them.
It’s not unfair to non-Nike athletes. They chose to sign with whatever company they did, no ones forcing you to run in whatever stuff Brooks or new balance will spit out before Tokyo. If the times are more important to them then the money, then start a gofundme, tear up your contract, and run in the SomethingFlys.
It would be unfair if it was say illegal for the back half of the pack to wear the shoes. It’s not. It’s their choice if they don’t
Sure, half and thon times are down since they came out. The level of competition and focus on the longer road races has also increased in this time which is why it’s stupid to suggest it’s all the shoes.
The current elite marathons are racing at levels never before seen, and in order to perform at these high levels and continue to improve they need to push their body in new ways during their training.
I credit the focus on road races and improvements in training and competition level much more than the shoes.
The above only applies to elite runners.
Let’s talk about the 17 minute 5k guy in your local turkey trot who’s wearing the SomethingFlys and the other guys and girls under 20 who are contributing the sea of pink and green at the start line.
They should not have their performance discredited because they have better gear. The slowest runners aren’t as invested into their training, and some $250 shoes won’t change that. The “faster” guys who are invested in their training would be stupid to not wear vaporflys and maximize their performance.

Exactly, i have tested them myself and am sorry to say that it's the shoes.
^ I guarantee neither of the above two posters is fast.
I'd like to think all of these athletes have it in them to run these times "unaided," but Brigid Kosgei destroying Paula's WR by a minute and a half? It seems like your ability to suspend disbelief is a lot higher than mine.
Sadly, I’ve been saying this for months but the social justice warriors come and say this isn’t pure running. Either we ban all shoes and spikes or we deal with it. I want everyone to stop crying about the damn shoes.

I think they probably are the best shoes out there, but just incrementally better than the next best.
Its crazy how well this worked out for Nike, "These shoes are so good we might have to ban them.". And then they didn't get banned. Nike couldn't have gotten better press if they paid for it.
Exactly. Amazing press. Friends who know nothing about running are asking me what I know about these Nike shoes people want to ban.
