He certainly took a big step up in XC
Most hs coaches aren't going to push their athletes to college-level training, meaning the number of long reps, the speed of the reps, and the overall mileage. Nor do they have the teammates to push them. Notice that numerous guys run sub 4 as freshmen in college after no one or almost no one does it as a senior in hs. Another guy said something about Josh Kerr being American. He's from the UK and went to college at UNM.
Eli Krahn ran 8:58 as a freshman. That is faster than Young or Rupp. He has never run faster.

Maybe. He ran just off of German Fernandez' senior year state meet time. That was Fernandez' best cross country race and Fernandez ran significantly faster than 8:40. If we are to believe that he wasn't running as hard as he could, that would indicate that he is significantly improved.
I wonder whether Young will target a fast 5k this season as it is not a traditional high school track distance or whether he will set his sights on something else. It will be a fun season to pay attention to, no matter what he decides to do.

Running a fast 5000 isn't always a priority for the top runners. Payton Jordan is the same weekend as CIF prelims, so it would have to be after the end of the HS season.
If I'm not wrong, Fernandez collapsed over the line after his 14:24. On the other hand, Nico said after his 14:28 that he was holding back for nationals. Nico is obviously way better than German, for XC at least.
