His volume is insane with 9 weeks before the trials.
And this week, he’s run 60 miles in two days over four runs.

Looks like he will be exhausted when he gets to the start line in Atlanta.
Maybe he'll pull an Al Howie and do a transcontinental run to Atlanta to prep for the trials.
Maybe he'll pull a Walmsley and walks it in again.
Or maybe he does a Walsmley and re-sets expectations and what is possible. Maybe he races like Wanjiru with complete irreverence of the course and distance and competition.
We shall see...
It would be really cool if he made the Olympics. It would legitimize ultra running on letsrun.

Walmsley is 200th and the last on the qualifier list for Atlanta. Why does anybody think he will make the Olympics?

I don’t think anyone is thinking that. The interest is seeing how well a runner who is known for competing in very different races can do.

Good comparison. Wanjiru ran 26:41 and Walmsley 29:09.
What race did Wanjiru run with such irreverence? It seemed like he set a hard pace just like every other great marathoner.

Not insane when you keep in mind he's not training for the trials.
Jimbo will not qualify for the olympics. It does not matter what anyone says or thinks.
The Olympics where he set a hard pace on a scorching hot day. At the time it was considered very unique.

I don’t believe he’s ever come close this this many miles or time per week training for anything. And I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of anyone running 175 miles a week for any race. Have you?
And what’s he training for? And how is it normals to run 175 miles for it?

People have run 175-200 miles per week. And some really good runners have done it too.
Does it make sense? Probably not.
And Jim is training for Atlanta and Comrades as far as I know.

Jerry Lawson who ran some pretty awesome marathons back in the early 90s would log up to 200 per week. He was also legit crazy.

And it paid off as he finally dropped a Moroccan late in the race and won by 44 seconds. Obviously there was nothing irrational about his strategy.
You're being dense, aren't you Aztec?
Wanjiru impacted the marathon game at the Olympics and World Championships with his front-running assault. It's documented history that you might have missed.
Also, check out his Chicago Marathon victory where he surges sub-2:05 for 800m segments in order to break Kebede.
What I think is being said is that maybe on the hills of Atlanta, we can see an irreverent run from Walmsley. The guy obviously has no fear of distance and pace. He's proven to push himself beyond the limits of what people think.
He still has another two months of training, so I'd like to see what happens when his training gets specific. As a US Marathon Championship guy that ended up moving to trails, I can respect a 1:04:00 effort off of trail running/training.
See y'all in Atlanta!!

"Ummm, ever heard of Gerry Lindgren?"

The other runners in the race are just as tough. You don't believe that Jared Ward can push himself as hard as Walmsley? Assuming everyone is healthy, it will come down to natural ability for running marathons. There is no mind over matter in non-ultra distance running.

Oh I dunno, maybe because last cycle two known ultra guys were 8th and 12th place at the trials in the marathon, and Walmsley is leaps and bounds better than the two of them put together.
