How do you even know who this person is? Don't you feel like a stalker for looking all of this up?
And newsflash to the ex-boyfriend: Run along and worry about law school now, ok?

You guys don't know your bylaws! Talk to your coach if you're really passionate about running for the team/coach (in spite of what the coach did). It is possible she may reinstate your scholarship and a steady ground will be met. If she doesn't, time to get down and dirty!!!!! Appeal the decision, and if you lose, get a badass lawyer and sue the shit out of them. They will give in. If you go this route, you won't necessarily have to run collegiately for the team... you'll just have a "hardship" from the athletic department that doesn't count against the program's # of scholarships.Inform yourself!!!!! Time to be meticulous, stand up for your rights, and be headstrong. Fight it! Read the NCAA bylaws (particularly 14 and 15):https://goomer.ncaa.org/wdbctx/LSDBi/LSDBI.homeDid you get a red shirt for the season you were injured? You were eligible for a redshirt if you only competed in one competition. Read below:14.2.4 Hardship WaiverA student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference or the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet for reasons of "hardship." Hardship is defined as an incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised: 8/8/02)....(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (measured by the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first scheduled contest or date of competition of the designated official NCAA championship playing season in the applicable sport) and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 4/3/02)(c) The injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 20 percent (whichever number is greater) of the institution's scheduled contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only scheduled competition (including exempted events but excluding scrimmages and exhibition contests identified as such in the legislation) against outside participants during the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 3/10/04, 5/11/05)
Unfortunately, she is under no legal obligation to guarantee you a scholarship beyond one year, nor can she guarantee the renewal of your scholarship if you suffered an injury. Furthermore, if you appeal it, the appeal's committee could very well "side" with the coach for the reasons below:
15.3.3.1 One-Year Limit
If a student's athletics ability is considered in any degree in awarding financial aid, such aid shall not be awarded in excess of one academic year.
15.3.3.1.2 Injury or Illness Policy
It is not permissible for an institution to assure the prospect that it automatically will continue a grant-in-aid past the one-year period if the recipient sustains an injury that prevents him or her from competing in intercollegiate athletics, but an institutional representative may inform the prospect of the regular institutional policy related to renewal or continuation of aid past the one-year period for recipients who become ill or injured during their participation.
Yes they can in D2!
NCAA Division II Manual
15.3.3.1.2 Injury or Illness Policy
It is not permissible for an institution to assure the prospect that it automatically will continue a grant-in-aid past the one-year period if the recipient sustains an injury that prevents him or her from competing in intercollegiate athletics, but an institutional representative may inform the prospect of the regular institutional policy related to renewal or continuation of aid past the one-year period for recipients who become ill or injured during their participation.
Wow, you really don't know the bylaws!!!! Even if what the person said is true, it doesn't guarantee the committee will side with the individual due to the bylaws mentioned above.
15.3.2.3 Written Statement Requirement
In all cases, the institutional agency making the financial aid award shall give the recipient a written statement of the amount, duration, conditions and terms of the award. The chair of the regular committee or other agency for the awarding of financial aid to students generally, or the chair's official designee, shall sign or electronically authorize (e.g., electronic signature) the written statement. The signature of the athletics director, attesting to the committee's award, does not satisfy this requirement. (Revised: 3/10/04)
15.3.2.4 Hearing Opportunity
The institution's regular financial aid authority shall notify the student-athlete in writing of the opportunity for a hearing when institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability is reduced or cancelled during the period of the award, or is reduced not renewed for the following academic year. The institution shall have established reasonable procedures for promptly hearing such a request and shall not delegate the responsibility for conducting the hearing to the university's athletics department or its faculty athletics committee.
Not so fast! You'd be surprised how many of these people associated with the athletic department are in "cahoots" with each other. The student should go to the financial aid person and the office of student affairs, not the compliance officer/AD/Assistant AD.
Nope, male coaches do it too.
It's not possible to lose the scholarship DURING the period of award due to injury:
15.3.4.3 Reduction or Cancellation Not Permitted
Institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability may not be increased, decreased or canceled during the period of its award: (Revised: 1/11/94)
(a) On the basis of a student’s athletics ability, performance or contribution to a team’s success;
(b) Because of an injury that prevents the recipient from participating in athletics; or
(c) For any other athletics reason.
These are the most intelligent, in-the-know comments on here. Right on!
Yikes... double yikes! You must be one of those bastard coaches. Seen the situation before.... from what side?!!!! Coach's side or athlete's side? Sure, a "talk" seems logical if the person has the desire of running for the coach/team, but from what it sounds like, the situation is a little rocky anyways. Who wants to run for someone who cut their education short by one year?!
Depends on the situation. If the school has been violating NCAA bylaws (which is why it's important to know the bylaws in the first place),possibly fabricating documents (which you can obtain through legal action), or is in violation of the "contract" that was signed, than working with a lawyer is a viable action.
this girl is an idiot. she goes on a well-known running messageboard and complains about her coach yanking her scholarship, but she posts her email address, which clearly identifies herself if one wants to do 30 seconds of research. i say take her scholarship and give it to somebody with two brain cells to rub together.
She used her email address... that and google help find out who she might be...
Well its pretty scary that somebody scrounged up her e-mail address and googled her. And by the way, I know for a fact that was posted by another girl on the team at the same university as Lauren, but it was not Lauren. However, the exact same thing happened to Lauren and she is the only one actively seeking vengeance in the matter. I informed her earlier this evening that it was her e-mail address used in this particular post. The other girls are just putting out feelers to find out what they can do. This happened to the whole damn team at this school. But again, who is creepy enough to go searching for who asked the question?
I say, Matt Gunn, get a life. Let her go dude. Let her go.
To "D1- been there, done that" - I clicked on this post because something recently happened to me that was similar. this post does not really apply to me because some parts are different. is there anyway i can get your email address so as to email you my situation privately and hear your advice?
Well....as a retired Division II Head Coach, I must share....scholarships are only yearly contracts. Of course it's courtesy and expected to renew them every year, but when student-athletes sign for their "Athletic-Aid", it's just a one year shot--like any other form of financial aid. So.....this can actually happen to anyone, at any time....and it sucks that Humboldt would do such a thing. No one signs a letter or contract saying you'll get it every year, however...
....for what it's worth.
PUKE THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many universities and conferences have rules above and beyond the NCAA, which are minimums that must be followed. There are many schools/conferences out there that honor a scholarship for the four life of the student athlete, not year-to-year. This makes an informal trip to the compliance officer a prerequisite for dealing with the situation.
Why is it creepy to try to find out what school would do something like what is being described? And then seeing what kind of times she runs to see if the coach might be justified in her actions.
Wake up and Welcome to the Internet Age....
