Only the advent of agriculture and concentrated populations required a change to make this taboo. Ag societies often face hard times and famine, and you can't have the people viewing each other as a food source when that happens, or chaos results and civilization falls apart. Instead the people are supposed to just die quietly of the famine.
Yeah, because rearing animals and growing food didn't cause a population explosion when coupled with the technology applied to doing it more efficiently. This is such a silly statement from a historical perspective, not to mention the health issues that have been caused by engaging in these behaviors. Do a simple search on this.
