Thank you for posting that article. I had no idea that his wing span is 3 inches longer than his height. Also, the part that talks about that he produces half the lactic acid of his competitors. He may produce the same amount of lactic acid but his body is able to clear it better than his competition. Who knows? 194 would be heavy for even a 6-4 Ft. runner. At that weight he has very little body fat and eats 12,000 calories to keep from losing weight. If he did try to be a competitive runner, he would probably have to lose weight and that would mean losing a lot of muscle which may lower his power to weight ratio. What can you say? Swimming is his sport. He has huge palms which act like paddles and propel him through the water. If he was better in a different sport he would have gravitated in that direction. Just like over a decade ago when Lance was retired from cycling and ran the NYC Marathon. I forgot who the current champion at NYC was during that time period, but I remember magazines doing head to head comparisons of the two and made posters that said Lance vs. whomever it was. Lance didn't stand a chance. It was stupid to even consider he had a chance of winning that marathon. He did fairly well with less than a year of marathon specific training. It's not like he was starting from zero. Bike riding is the best exercise which closely translates to running. I know he ran cross country in high school and began doing triathlons. This is when he found that he was better on the bike. Who knows at what age he started PEDs.
I was thinking about how strange it would look to see Phelps in a track racing tank top and shorts. His tall height compared to the other runners and his even longer arms, but his stride being short and stubby looking compared to the rest of his body.

I'm also 6' 2" and have a 32" inseam. 30 through 32 is typical on most retailer websites.
5' 11" and 36" inseam ? That sounds like a freakish percentage of leg length to the rest of the body.
U.S. Olympic Trial time qualifier many years ago, my dad.
So was my Dad. What's your Dad's name, they may know each other.
Phelps may have some form of connective tissue disease and/or a touch of gigantism. Classic body structure- look at his freakishly long arms, huge palms, long feet. Helps with pulling power.

meh, no flexibility there

If your father is Frank Shorter or Jeff Galloway or Jon Anderson, 10000m types, most likely not.

he is the right size for swimming in height but his other advantages are not that significant
I'm 5'8" tall, and my inseam is 32 5/8",
Phelp's inseam is much less than mine, but his wingspan is 12" longer.
His legs look dainty compare to mine, which is definitely an advantage for him when swimming.
Most of my weight is in my legs, and they tend to sink in the water. I have practiced swimming
quite a bit, tried all the different techniques, and regardless of that my legs are constantly sinking.
It is really hard for me to swim fast for that reason.
Phelp's little dinky legs just float along at the top behind his much bigger and longer upper body,
which makes a huge difference. Anyone who thinks it doesn't is kidding himself.
Michael Phelps is NOT 6'4" his is 6'2".

Cardio-wise, 200m freestyle swimming matches up with 800m T&F. There are some rare athletes who may have matched equally well for both, say until age 12, then the training for one or the other alters one's body build. Two-hundred metres was Phelps' best freestyle event. Due to his weird body build, I say Phelps' 800m potential would have been in 2:07.5 to 2:10 range. With a build closer to a runner/swimmer hybrid build, I believe Ryan Lochte in his prime would have been a 1:55 to 1:57.5 800m runner.
Jamin, why you be check'n out guys bods and making comments on them? Is that how you roll? (not that there's anything wrong with that)
