With his short legs and massive feet I wonder what running distance would suit.

With feet reduction surgery, I am thinking Japanese Ekiden runner.
Phelps has an inferior body structure for any other sport other than swimming. Long torso and short little legs.
What's his inseam?

Phelps' legs are the length for the average 5'10" man. Is that 31 or 32 inseam?

Bro I am 6'2 with a 32 inseam. Never swam competitively as a kid but was a life guard and swore I was the best swimmer in the school. Wondered why I sucked at running so much. My measurements must have just been off. haha
With that upper body strength, short and long endurance capability, winning mentality and focus experience - I'm thinking Obstacle Course Racing or American Ninja Warrior.
He's an Olympics junkie, for sure. Has he announced his intentions yet, or will he just show for the swim trials like nothing is new?
Phelps is done but Lochte has a shot in the 200 IM still, working out 3x/week
He will 100% be in Omaha next June

Good proportions for wrestling. Long arms would be helpful as a quarterback in football. Not bad in tennis either. Helpful in hockey, since the skates at a few inches to your inseam, so long legs can make control difficult. It would be great in crew and in kayaking.
Some other sports where it doesnt help or hurt would be baseball and basketball, in these sports there is some running aspects, but some other aspects that favor long arms.
Sports where it would hurt him would be pretty much only running and soccer. It doesnt hurt in track and field in general, though, short legs and long arms is great for a discus or javelin thrower.
So yeah, it does hurt him in some sports, but your claim that those body proportions are only suitable for swimming and anybody with those proportions couldn't succeed in any other sport is bogus. It is just the swimming very strongly rewards short legs and long arms.

Obviously tough mudders. Long legged elite distance runners struggle in these events because the mud collects on their shoes making their long strides ineffective due to the added weight at the end of an extremity. Phelps short legs and choppier stride would be far more efficient and his strong upper body would allow him to maintain form throughout the duration of the race.
Is that his girlfriend standing next to him?

You thought 32" inseam was normal for 6'2"? I'm 5'11" with 31 or 32 inseam. I thought I have a long torso. My father is 5'11" with a 36" inseam.
I'm also 6' 2" and have a 32" inseam. 30 through 32 is typical on most retailer websites.
5' 11" and 36" inseam ? That sounds like a freakish percentage of leg length to the rest of the body.

Phelps is 6'4" with a 6'7" wingspan, which this article claims is a huge advantage but which is actually not particularly long relative to his height. In the NBA, there are many players with a 4-6" differential between wingspan and height. He has size 14 feet but that is not that big relative to his height. His torso is long and legs short, but all in all, he is the right size for swimming in height but his other advantages are not that significant. What differentiates him from many other swimmers is the 6 hrs in the pool every day, and what separates him from the elites is probably the way that time is structured, the kinds of workouts he does.
