Yes. I do everything legal I can to maximize my profits. I'm not in the renting business for charity. In the meantime, I'm providing housing to someone that otherwise would have had to pay more or live in a less desirable home. They choose my listings of their own free will. I've never been taken to court over a dispute on a security deposit, and honestly have rarely even had anyone contest my list of damages and amounts withheld.
When I hire a contractor to do work, I also get several quotes and negotiate very hard to get the lowest price. I like the money I earn, and I want to keep as much of it as possible. If that makes me deplorable, then I'm happy to be deplorable.
That being said, I give a lot of money and volunteer time to charity. Ironically, one of the charities I volunteer for is Habitat for Humanity to build low-income housing for people that deserve it.
If someone comes in my house and mistreats it, I don't see why I should be lenient or nice to a person like that.
Let me ask, when you get a raise at work, or negotiate a contract (depending on what line of work you're in), do you just let your boss/customer walk all over you, or do you try to get the best deal for yourself and your family?
