Hardly. They are the highlight of every year. I plan well in advance and have a packed itinerary in place.
For one thing, I can't imagine flying to the destination, unless it is overseas. That ruins the experience. I'll drive and pick off new sites along the way, studying the opportunities that are just off the interstate or nearby. It might mean I'll pull into the hotel at 11 PM or 2 AM but always well worth it.
Eating is a waste during vacations. That is a secret to making the most of the time. I am so glad my parents taught me that at an early age. So many people think they have to experience local cuisine. It is nothing but succumbing to peer pressure. When you visit the Boston area and someone thinks it is cool to ask where you ate, while rattling off their stuffy experience, just laugh at them. You were far too busy taking in this and that to waste a couple of hours on food. The only time I've cared about food during a vacation is during an extended cruise, like to Europe or Alaska. At that point food becomes part of the ship experience. Otherwise it is like slicing your vacation by huge percentage. When I return from a trip I never, ever think about the food I had, and it drops to even less significance when I review the vacation a year or more later.
In contrast, it is amazing how frequently I'll return from a vacation and one of the cities and/or sites I visited is reference on Jeopardy, or in the media. Uncanny. Just a few weeks ago I wouldn't have known the answer or placed that reference at all. Now I can smile and envision everything in the area, and the surroundings, while cherishing everything I did that day.
I have the rest of the year to be exhausted. On trips it is go...go...go. My motto during vacations is..."There is no such thing as being tired."
Of course, my occupation as Las Vegas sports bettor enabled extensive traveling. When I had a great year wagering I would leave town throughout the furnace summer months and see the globe for 3 months. I still hate the memories of the 3-4 years I fared poorly and had to stay in town during those torturous summer months. It always peaked my motivation to make sure it wouldn't happen again.
