So the US women routed Thailand today 13-0 in the women's World Cup. Some have criticized the US for running up the score. Abby Wambach has defended the US team and says people criticizing the US are being sexist.
Update: Here's the craziest celebration to go up 9-0:

and Wambach's response

I 100% disagree. I think if an American men's team was clowning around up 13 to 0 the reaction might even be bigger than it is for the US women.
I've got no issue with the goals but the celebrations when we were already in double digits were over the top in my opinion.
And I'm not the only one thinking that. 4 Canadian women commentators ripped the Americans' actions. 3 of them called it "disgraceful."
Other words they used were:
"Unacceptable"
"Unnecessary"
"Disrespectful."
"Embarrassed"
See it for yourself.

Fair or Foul? Canadians rip US women's soccer team for "disgraceful" celebrations in 13-0 rout.

Canadians cheered Durant’s injury last night, so they do not have the moral high ground here.

Meh, much ado about nothing.

I completely agree, and it was extremely lame for Wambaugh to try playing the sexist card. Show some sportsmanship, once it’s 5-0, play all your subs and if they still score another time or two, go into delay mode and work on killing time. -
How utterly predictable to revert to sexism as an excuse for boorish behavior.
I’m American and sadly think that the team did not represent the country honorably. -
Scoring was fine.
Celebrating was obnoxious.
That’s just me. -

So let me tell you what is slightly different here. First of all I'm not condoning the cheering of an injury but lets have some context.
The play where Durant hurt himself wasn't an immediately catastrophic situation - the play was a stripped ball leading to a fast break layup in the game that could have won the finals. It appeared at first like an ankle sprain/tweak of some sorts and in the heat of the moment there aren't many NBA arenas in a close-out game of the finals that wouldn't have had this spot reaction - let's stop kidding ourselves here. I believe when the dust settled on the play and it was apparent that it was very serious the mood changed very quickly ion that arena - this was obvious even from the TV broadcast.
In contrast at 7-0 after scoring 4 times in 6 minutes, nothing is an impassioned "heat of the moment" situation. Its the first game of the World Cup against a clearly outmatched and vastly inferior opponent. Celebrating goals in such a manor from this point onward is absolute BS, period.
A better comparison would be a basketball team flexing and smack talking after throwing down dunks and raining 3's when up 40 points against a team that has given up.
Wambach trying to deflect with some cleverly crafted sexism angle is also really unfortunate. Sorry to all team USA fans out there - there was pretty disgraceful as was pointed out. -
It’s the World Cup, not rec soccer. These are supposed to be 24 of the top teams in the world. A number of goals were scored by subs ( Pugh, Mewis, etc.), and anytime you touch the ball you want to score. Canada should worry more about the fact that they only beat Cameroon, who is lower ranked than Thailand, by a score of 1-0. Additionally, one of the tie breakers for the next round is goal differential, so there is merit to scoring as many points as possible. Heck, Australia lost to Italy and Argentina tied Japan, so it is not like upsets can’t happen.

Have we tested the chromosones and testosterone levels of these so-called American "women"?

i am canadian, and it is a snowflake culture, a loser culture.
americans for all their warts and whatnot are much preferred.
america is the only way to go, ya.
if you win, why not celebrate.
it you lose, get better. if you don't like someone celebrating. -
i lost some races, and there should have been more negative consequences.
there should have been boos, and spit, and rotten eggs thrown. -

I’ve never understood this. I totally get playing your subs and playing in a neutral formation vs an aggressive offensive one. (In basketball, take off the press). But you should still play your hardest and that involves trying to score since it’s the point of the game. In my mind, the ultimate sign of disrespect is when someone (or a team) stops trying to score. It’s basically saying “We’re so much better than you, we’re not even going to play soccer anymore, we’re just going to play keepaway. No competitor wants that. I’d rather lose 25-0 and fight every minute than have the other team quit playing.
I’m not one to celebrate, but celebrating is somewhat just the culture of soccer. It would be more disrespectful to me if a player didn’t celebrate when they scored on us (if they normally did). It would seem as if they’re saying “Normally I’d be thrilled to score a goal in the World Cup... but it’s just Thailand so it doesn’t even matter”. How can any competitor be okay with this?? If the kids are 10, maybe I can understand. But these are pro athletes and some of the most competitive people on Earth. They don’t want pity, just like no Professional runner would want the pity clap for coming in last place by 15+ seconds. (I’ve received the pity clap twice- those are my two most embarrassing moments).
I agree that it is not sexist at all though. -
Ok, there are two things here:
1.) Winning by 13 is fine in the group state, as goal differential matters. Sweden is in the same group and they are a solid team, and also will most likely win by a lot against Thailand. You are playing to win your group, and since everyone plays Thailand, you get as many points as you can in case of a tie. How embarrassing would it be if USA doesn't advance as the top team because they decide to play mercy at a GD of +7 and then Sweden gets +8?
2.) The celebrations were ridiculous and embarrassing. That was classless. -
First World Cup goal? This is Rapinoe's 3rd World Cup... more cringeworthy than Neymar's flopping!

Wait, people are watching the women’s World Cup?
-
You only get 3 subs at this level of soccer! You can’t empty your bench.

Funny the old USA....if the shoe was on the other foot well we would be jumping up and down.
To beat an inferior opponent and keep putting on the pressure is well what it is....
Now in a running sense I came across the line in 1992 10k Road Champs in East Tennessee and pumping my fist with 11th place performance and everyone thought i was being a jerk.. I was a nobody but beat the likes of Brantly, Johnson, Broe and a slew of others and I was noone so yea USA is what it is.....if the shoe fits you wear it. Be careful of celebrating too hard their is always a fox around the corner. -
I agree that it was ridiculous. 10 goals in the 2nd half? Once it is 7-0 or 8-0, call off the dogs and just sit on the lead. I lost some respect for the USWNT.

1. Nobody gives half a fxxx about women's soccer. So they are trying to bring the hype up.
2. Not scoring n out of pity or not celebrating means taking away the soul and the gist of the game.
3. Don’t want to lose badly? Go train harder. Or just skip the game to get 0:3 on technical defeat. There is no excuse for having weak teams in WC from weak federations and not letting better teams from more cometetive federations to participate because of the quota.
Fifa is currupt anyway -
Oh puhleaze, that was nothing. If you want to talk bad sportsmanship, you should've seen Secretariat at the 1973 Belmont.
3/4 of the way through the race, it was clear that Sham had gone out too fast (his quadriceps locked up and he just plummeted into last place) and no one was going to catch Secretariat.
In a totally classless move, even though he already had the race well in hand, Secretariat turned on the burners and torched the other runners by 31 lengths - when he could've trotted it in down the homestretch (a la Michael Johnson in almost every 400m he ever raced) to show some respect to his overmatched competitors.
Then after the finish line, he did a dressage prance backwards, while pointing his hoof mockingly at Twice a Prince and My Gallant as they stumbled to the finish. He then went over in front of Sham's owner's box and pissed on Pancho Martin's shoe.
