Elle St. Pierre's first 5k in two years is also worthy of everyone's attention.

Could she be planning a 1500-5k double at the Trials?

Also interesting to see Henes and Morgan on the list. They both ran at Oxy (although I guess Henes paced). It will be cool to see if Morgan can get the standard in this race.

Maybe whether or not ESP doubles depends on how she does here? Certainly seems like she is considering it. It kind of makes sense with Monson out. Can she beat Cranny over 5k though?

Henes is one of the featured entrants in Sound Running's Track Fest 10k race this Saturday -- so have to wonder about her coming back six days later to race a high-quality 5k.

ESP may simply be opening her outdoor season with an overdistance race for training purposes. Or, she may simply want a 5k Oly Q in her back pocket in case things go sideways in the 1500. However, the 5k comes first at the Oly Trials, with a three-day gap between the 5k finals and the first round of the 1500. So, a double is certainly doable.

As for Elise, the recent RW article stated she's chasing her 14:52 Oly Q this Saturday night at Track Fest, then may race the 1500 at either LA Grand Prix (where's she's listed as an early entrant) or Pre Classic. But, at this point, who knows what her fitness is? We'll find out in a few days.

Now see that Cole is an entry in the "B" race -- but Cooper is not.

So, appears at this time that Cole will be racing Kergat, Hacker, et al in the "B" race while Cooper remains with the "A Team."

Update: Klecker entered in the Oslo 5k on 5/30.

I’m genuinely confused, but that would be quite a field.

The USATF.org entry list is only for the "D", "C" and "B" races.

I don't get why they are only teasing a few names. It would generate more interest if they listed all that have confirmed. I understand if someone has not confirmed yet but if they have, post the names.

For example, the women's 1500 says, "6 women have run sub 4." They list Welteji, Snowden, Cranny, and Johnson. Who are the other two? If they are Americans, the only possible options are St. Pierre (running the 5000 already), MacLean, Wiley, Hiltz, Norris, and Mackay. Some people might not care if another foreigner sub-4 is running, but most will be interested in the USA runners.

Slight correction: above entry list does include the 800 "A" races which will still be held Saturday afternoon.

Friday night's distance carnival had always been a stand-alone event organized by USATF and known in the past as the USATF Distance Classic aka Oxy High Performance Meet, held at Occidental College.

Starting last year, USATF folded the Distance Classic into it's new 2-day event branded the USATF LA Grand Prix, making it a full-fledged t&f meet with lots more $$ and near Diamond League fields, relocated to UCLA's Drake Stadium.

But why two entry websites? Bureaucracy, I would guess.

It would be great for the USA team to have ESP represent us in the 5K. No one else would be remotely competitive in the Olympics.

Hoping not all the athletes in the 5000m entries are actually going to be in the B heat (unless that is deliberate). Kurgat's PB means he obviously should be in an A heat. Hacker's World Indoors results should earn him an A heat position if he wanted. Hocker and Teare on talent should be too. Beadlescomb's PB should get him in too, though he's been running less well since.

Alternate theory: The guys listed there are doing the race as more of a tune-up/qualifying run. Hocker, Teare and Hacker lack the standard. So they can go out conservatively and not at the pace the A heat will go. Beadlescomb isn't in form to attack a race paced at 12:50 or faster (even from the back of the train). Kurgat may very well have Kenyan 10K trials pretty close to this at Pre, so it wouldn't make sense to chase another PB here necessarily. That's my best guess. For Kurgat, if Kenyan Trials for the 10K aren't then, he should definitely switch heats.

Yes, a shame that Monson is out for the season, as she would be competitive until the kicking started. Elle St. Pierre, on the other hand, dominated Tsegay at indoor World's in a fierce time, so it would be very interesting to see what she could do at 5000m. It might be a bit long for her, though.

Now 5 days out from Friday's Distance Carnival.

Great to see Hassan entered in the W 5k "A" race. She already has her Oly Q from last summer so is entered just for the sake of racing her way back into shape -- and might pull someone else along to her Q.

With Elly Henes not racing the 10k at Track Fest Saturday night, more likely we will see her in this race.

Still to be revealed/confirmed, however, is the composition of the M 5k "A" race. Only Cole Hocker is "Accepted/Declared" from this "" public relations link. Since the Pre Classic has no men's distance races longer than the Bowerman Mile, are Cheptegei, Barega and Kiplimo really flying over from Africa to do this "one-off" race then fly back to Europe for the Oslo meet a couple weeks later?

USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix | Track & Field

The annual USA Track & Field Los Angeles Grand Prix is a multi-day gold-label event with elite track and field competitions and athletes.

From the USATF entry lists, looks like the M 800 "A" race Saturday afternoon will feature Jake Wrightman and Peter Bol.

However, entry lists for Saturday's meet which includes the 800 & 1500 "A" races have yet to be released.

Still, very happy to see that meet management moved the M 5k "A" race from Saturday's lineup to Friday night's Distance Carnival where 9:30 pm PDT temps will be perfect for time trial racing.

Note that HS soph Beth Leachman is racing the 5k.

Will be in the "B" heat, likely.

Another opportunity to lower her own HS record.
