I really wish that Salazar and Armstrong were in prison for life.
I really wish that Salazar and Armstrong were in prison for life.
Yeah...that is crazy! Why in the world would a prestigious coach like Salazar send such an ominous message like that to one of the world's notorious dopers? Crazy if you ask me. Lol.
Plowed through this somewhat flatulent thread and nobody seems to adequately emphasize the extent of the massive, multi-million dollar fraud he committed -- orders of magnitude greater than any previous TDF champion. Merckx, Indurain, et al may have doped but saw nowhere near the payday Lance did. There is just no comparison.
Years and years later, when he finally had to prostrate himself before Oprah and admit he cheated, did he voluntarily return any of his ill-gotten millions? Fat chance. US Govt/Postal Service had to threaten to drag his cheap, chiselling ass into court to the tune of $100m and basically let him off light in a $5m pre-trial settlement.
He had the chutzpah to sue SCA Promotions -- who had already paid him millions in bonuses for his 2002 and 2003 Tour wins -- when they balked at rewarding him again in 2004 in the midst of well-documented allegations of his cheating. He lied under oath in that lawsuit and prevailed -- SCA had to fork over another $7.5m. They were only able to recover a fraction of the $10m they were awarded at arbitration in their 2013 counter claim. Other companies which also paid him bonuses wound up in similar situations -- unable to recover the total they paid out and certainly nothing in damages.
He won libel judgments against newspapers which he then had to return. A sportsman and a gentleman. A true champ.
Did he give Nike back any of the millions they paid him and his foundation? Nope. Nike even fought subpoenas for emails in the Feds' lawsuit. How about Trek? Giro? Radio Shack? Ditto.
Am amazed at the number of posters here who still defend this mono-nad sociopath or attempt to minimize his rank venality, and still seem to admire him.
HE'S THE BIGGEST SPORTS FRAUD IN HISTORY!!
Lance fought tooth and nail to hang onto the proceeds of that fraud and largely succeeded in doing so. He's worth $50m today. He should be penniless and in jail. I'm sure his example will be studied as a success at business schools coast to coast and abroad for years to come.
And yet his power outputs were in the normal range for an elite cyclist.
Weird huh?
Definitely biggest sports fraud ever...way bigger than what, I don’t know, the Russian doping scandal? Getting the KGB to change piss bottles is just small potatoes. An entire country booted from the Olympic Games...maybe Putin and the Russian minister of sport should have contacted Lance. Total amateur hour in Moscow.
