It's not "early season" down there.
Also note that the Atlanta track was very fast (almost illegally so, Malmo?) and is it is at a non-trivial altitude. JRM's calculator adjusts the 44.44 mark to 44.518. In addition, if you look at the videos you will see that there is considerable wind. It was reported the 200 had a -2.2mps reading, and it looked like a cross wind, so the speed was likely something in the -3mps range when the 200 was run, although I do not know what it was at the time of the 400). Races in Olympic stadiums are typically with calm winds because the entire stadium is surrounded.
So, I think that this race is [intrinsically - not sure that is right word] superior to MJ's; however it is also 22 years later.
