Sounds like 1 and 2 don’t apply to you, so not really cringe. But a D1 runner who is not making up anything spent on gear by getting some kind of scholarship is operating at a deficit, and depending on the program there’s definitely an opportunity cost in terms of time spent training that could be used on professional development rather than a hobby.
Are you serious? Perhaps they just enjoy the lifestyle, enjoy being fit, enjoy having it be part of their lives. As if we're all just supposed to be cogs in the machine, right?

When people say " cogs in the machine".

I realised I wasn't interested in running faster just further.
Seen several times on ultra running sites.
Who do you coach? I think I would make a good one. I would respect and appreciate my runners and respect their wishes to run longer races.. Stepping up the distance is symbolic with the rise of your athleticism. You can't call yourself a true runner until you do a marathon. When you go to ultras, you are part of a rare and special group. It is like you have evolved. You develop the ability to keep going and going and going throughout grueling distances.
Fresh out of college I got a job as an appointment setter for a web development company. Upon meeting the staff there was this 18 year old who claimed to be a professional rock climber. He was a complete prick and started bragging about running a 6 hour marathon, whereas one of the other employees asked him "Did you ever consider trying out for the olympics?" I was furious, fortunately I landed a GA position and gtfo of that office.
"I was starting to fall off the pace, but then I felt my base kick in"
- Guy who bragged all XC season about the mega miles he ran over summer
About 50% of Prefontaine's quotes. He was a bit full of himself talking about guts.

Lol, this is my favorite story so far! ?
Woman: I hear you're a runner.
Me: Yeah
Woman: Have you run marathons?
Me: Yeah
Woman: How many?
Me: Around 50
Woman: I run marathons too.
Me: Cool
Woman: I ran a 5 mile marathon last weekend.
I didn't read any of the responses so sorry if it's already been said.
"Go out slow and taper off"
"Distance runners are athletic."
Running is barely a sport. I would hardly call pro distance runners who can barely lift themselves out of bed after their third afternoon nap athletic. Especially since the vast majority of pro's are emaciated vegans.

This one takes the cake so far in my opinion. Makes me shudder just thinking about it!
Anybody who uses the phrasr hobby jogger, the ultimate in cringe-worthy.
“It doesn’t get easier, you just get tougher”
Umm.. lmao of course it gets easier . Running fast feels like a breeze when in shape vs when out of shape. Yes you get tougher, but being in shape 100% makes running easier.
Wheating or Acosta?
Does this count? I told my crush that I was Boston qualified.
Hell, that sounded awesome back in the day, though.
As Parker himself said, "One editor said my dialogue was sophomoric. I responded that many of my characters were, in fact, sophomores."
I miss being an athlete. Chronic illness sucks. Don't get it.
I ran D1...
