Interesting profile of Tanner who is headed to UW next year.
He has until June 29 next year to run 3:35.0 or qualify through a world ranking system.
The qualifying standard has dropped 1.2 seconds from Rio. The task for Tanner is enormous but in his mind, not insurmountable.
"I think that my capability means I have the potential to be a sub 3.30 runner - similar to Nick Willis - so if that's my potential then I think 3.35 should be doable by the time I'm 19 or 20," he said.
If it doesn't come in Tokyo, he knows he will still be ascending towards his peak in Paris four years later.
What the new crop of non-African young middle-distance talent seems to possess is genuine confidence and self-belief. They know what they're capable of and have the attitude that if they do the work they will get there and be up among the best.
He destroyed Hamish Carson who had been training at altitude in Kenya. I hope UW doesn't ruin him, one more year of this improvement is 3:36. I think that he could be world class at 5,000m.

"No mug?" But He's got a man bun.
Not surprised to see he’s a great surfer. The best runners I’ve encountered are all great in at least one or two other sports. True specialists at running that I’ve encountered always get beat by better athletes. I suspect this is true at the pro levels as well.

Well, Andy Powell certainly didn't "ruin" Amos Bartelsmeyer, who went from 3:39 for 1500 to 3:55 for the mile, and from 7:57 to 7:49 in the 3K (with a 6th place at Euros in his debut appearance on that stage).
Didn’t know Andy was coaching him. What’s the connection?

The kid is attending UW next year.
Analyse this guys social media page, he's so chilled about life, has some raw talent in alot of different areas
If he can meet his goal of 3:38 next month, then 3:35 next year would be eminently attainable.
On a serious note..I hope he plays it very safe in the waves. Too many stories of shark attacks claiming surfers' lives in that part of the world.

Perfect - so they have the same attitude as the African young middle-distance talent.
