Her IG post was probably the most humble response I have read. She said it was her hamstring and didn’t work out. I give her a ton of credit for blaming anything or anyone in her post. Much respect for her after giving it a go.

Whelp, that was not the race I hoped to run. After 16 miles of loving every second and feeling confident I was going to run in the mid to high 2:30s, I started to feel an old hamstring injury from 2015. I told myself it was in my mind, but 2.5 miles later I had trouble putting weight on it. It was an agonizing decision to drop shortly after 19 miles, knowing I’d have to walk the rest of the way in if I kept going.? I have dreamt of finishing a marathon for months now, and was so excited to run down Lamar and run under under the arch. I am so disappointed to not achieve that goal.

One of the things I’ve always loved about the marathon is that there are no guarantees, good or bad. I can’t believe I trained so hard to be derailed by something I haven’t felt in 2 years, but I also accept that sometimes life doesn’t go the way we hope. I’d be lying if I said this will be easy to brush off, because when you’ve really worked hard for something, it’s hard to let it go.

For now I need to rest, recover, and give it a few days. But I think I’ll be taking my running in a new direction. This hasn’t ruined marathoning for me because I’ve always respected what a difficult and beautiful beast it can be. But this certainly will hurt for a while.

Hands down the worst part was not being able to finish for all of you who have been so kind and supportive throughout my career and for my coaches and family who were here supporting me.

Dropping out of marathons? Galen and Kara seem to have something in common.

This thread is trash and should be deleted. She's a former top American runner who just wants to race again in the masters category. She isn't doing anything wrong. The only thing questionable about her continuing on with competition is that it makes me wonder if she'll be too banged up to even walk and carry on normal activities by her late 40s. To me, it wouldn't be worth it, but she has made her choice to keep running and there is nothing wrong with that. Paula Radcliff faced similar criticism when she kept trying to come back after her foot surgeries. She finally realized that she needed to stop for her health. Let Kara figure that out on her own time and without these pointless, hateful message board threads!

I am a woman, not a fan of Salazar or the Oregon Project by any means, and I still find Kara’s schtick annoying. I don’t really relate to her story at all, I can’t afford $80 vests (even if they’re spreading feminism or whatever) her crybaby antics don’t strike me as brave. Not sure why one would need to include the word 'still' in the above post like there is some assumption that woman support other woman. That's funny as it's pretty much the opposite in this country. I would guess besides the Nike shills most of those bashing Kara on this thread are other females. I don't necessarily agree that those others listed get a lot of love on this site either. I think there was a much too long thread on how old Shalane and Deena look for their ages recently and plenty of hate when Desi voiced her displeasure for the Hanson's decision to bring on Dathan (and it wasn't due to his recent history of dropping out of marathons.)

I will not be too hard on her, but a 2015 hamstring injury would have reared its ugly head much sooner than today. Having had a very bad hamstring, it is the most finicky of injuries and something from 4 years ago would not have allowed you to train for a marathon unless it was fully healed.
