Wait ... that's a good thing. Once a coach gets too old to run with the team, they lose a certain amount of respect ... especially if they are overweight and look like a couch potato!
How many coaches out there actually run or did run with their team? I see very few. Did Joe Vigil? Duane Vandenbusche? Mick Byrne? Vin Lananna? Damon Martin? Does Bill Belichik get down on the line and hit? Does Dabo Swinney run routes and catch passes? Is Nick Saban in the weight room squatting with the O-line? I used to run some with the team when I was a young coach, and less as I got older. I was better coach the less I ran with them because I spent more time observing them at different points in the runs, and attending to what they needed and less to what I needed. I was also able to attend to safety and emergency needs better because I was meeting them at certain points and could observe everyone versus being 3 miles away when something happened and taking 25 or 30 minutes to get there because I was on foot.
