So slacking off in class makes you a better runner? Just get out of here and stop bringing up Rupp. You don't know what he took.

His collegiate career is not as disappointing as Knights or Ches' pro careers...
Lol what??
Just want to point out that Knight began his Pro Career in a non outdoor championships year. Also he has already been to worlds or the olympics or both. I forget which one but Knight and Cheserek have accomplished more in their running career than fisher has to date or by their senior year. No knock against Fisher either I actually like all 3 runners.
Says "Get in the sea", the real closet case racist with deep seeded hatred.
I saw Grant Fisher win the Portage Invite in West Michigan as a senior when I was an 8th-grade xc runner about to warm up for my race that day. I didn't realize it was him initially, but looking back at the results from that day a couple years later, I realized it had to be him because I remember the clock saying 14:xx when he crossed the line, and he as the only guy to break 15 that day, running 14:43. His margin of victory also shocked me as he won the race by something like 100/150 meters. Ever since then, he's been my idol. Whenever I'm bored, I love to watch his Footlocker wins online because he's just a smooth and confident runner. I've followed much of his college career, rejoicing in his 5000 win at NCAAs two years ago, watching the live splits from NCAA XC last year as he slowly clawed his way back up into the top five, picking him to win both the 5000 and 3000 at NCAA Indoors last year, only to have him come up short. But my favorite part about Grant Fisher was the LRC interview with him after NCAA Indoors last year where he talked about the mistakes he had made. He was honest and vulnerable about how he hadn't been getting enough sleep as he was putting his grades before his running. He said that after that race, he would start being satisfied with losing a couple points on his homework if it meant getting enough sleep. It was this interview that lowered Grant from god-like status in my mind to just being a regular human being like myself. I had been struggling to balance school and sleep as a high school runner last year and Grant's words of wisdom have stuck with me. You can't be perfect in everything, but you can be perfect in whatever you prioritize. Two more national championships later, Grant has still come up short of his second title, but I still respect him and look up to him because he's not a professional. He's a student first, just like I am. He has to juggle running and school just like I do. He still has girl issues and fights with friends just like I do. And best of all, he was the first runner to inspire me and one of the greatest to come out of my beloved state of Michigan. So, no matter how the rest of his career turns out Grant Fisher is still my hero. He will never disappoint me.

How would you view Grant's collegiate career so far? As a 2x FL champ, a sub 4 high school guy, and with that long unbeaten streak he had for a couple years, I would have expected more. No NCAA XC wins. Only 1 NCAA title 2 years ago in the 5k outdoors.
Do you think he has underperformed? Or is it tough that he had to deal with some pretty crazy talent: Ed Ches for 2 years, a 5th year McDonald who has essentially been in Australia for a significant amount of last year training, Justyn Knight.
Curious on other people's thoughts. Obviously I know he's more talented than me and has taken tough classes and I tip my hat. But as a fan of the sport, curious what people think of his career thus far and his post college potential
"How would you view Grant's collegiate career so far?"
He's had a very good college career.
"Do you think he has underperformed?"
No.
Not all dominant 1500/5000 guys are able to the beat specialists in XC. It's hard to imagine a more talented 1500/5000 runner than Lagat but he never won an NCAA XC championship. Fisher's 2nd place is pretty good if he's going to end up a 1500/5000 guy.
This explains so much...
Let's hold off on this until after NCAA Outdoors next spring. Grant is probably the favorite to win the indoor 3K, and he'll have a great shot at winning the outdoor 5K. If he gets a second title, there's no way you can call his career a disappointment.
I didn't know Grant Fishers mom was on Let's Run
Once he graduates, he will truly shine. Electrical Engineering at Stanford has got to take a toll on his running

Typical bullshit LR thread. He's had the best marks of ANY collegiate runner since he started as a frosh. He's a human being and has always been a factor.
Way to contribute to a nice discussion man. He has accomplished a lot in his career at Stanford. If I had to guess 4 years ago, I would have wagered he would have more than 1 NCAA title at this point. Just wanted to see what everyone else thought. Have a good one. And go Grant, always rooting for humble guys like you.
Friend, you're the one added: Disappointment? to the thread title. That is so typical of LR posters, rooting around for weakness where there is none. It's SO rare for anybody here to start up a thread in praise of a runner - yours falls into the 'Debbie Downer' category like so many before and so many to come.
If you were a true fan you’d know that interview was after OUTDOOR NCAAs, not indoor.
I too was shocked by the absurdity of Former MI runner’s post, but I am not certain it is reflective of racism. It’s not as if he is trying to develop a definition that includes Grant Fisher but excludes Justyn Knight.
But it is certainly reflective of a viewpoint that fails to understand the enormous advantages and opportunities that being born in a place like the US or Canada brings to a person, even in a sport such as distance running. Everyone talks about the advantages of elevation and having to run miles to school every day. You know what else is important to a developing runner? Consistent nutrition, protection from childhood disease, great athletic facilities, not living in a war zone, great schools and facilities, and the freedom to do the sport that best fits your athletic ability / interest.
And most importantly: OPPORTUNITY. Nearly every US-born runner of a certain genetic ability who is willing to work hard can win a scholarship to college. The same is not true of someone with the same genetic ability born in East Africa.
I have not read the thread, but Grant Fisher is a good college runner, but his career has not even begun, Like Bill Rodgers who said his best run in college was when he ran 8:58 for 2 miles, a time many run in high school, Fisher is better than Rodgers was in college, so maybe Fisher will win the Boston and New York Marathons 4 times each and Fukuoka and Houston and etc.
lets see what he has done at age 35-40 before we say if his career was a disappointment.
What is the genetic ability?
It seems pretty clear Morgan McDonald has been spent a year getting ready for this race. He ducked Knight last year and wanted a home course advantage. Grant could have easily RS this season to avoid McDonald and have an easier road to the title next year. I respect that he didn’t and he almost won the race.
Have heard EE at Stanford to be the hardest undergraduate degree at the university and the most prestigious undergrad degree.
He is running the 5k and xc distances extremely well for a very young man....

I just want to point out that Knight has in no way proven as anyone of note in the pro ranks, while as you can see, Fisher is one if the best in the ncaa. Knight ended up 9th in the worlds...behind Butchart. Knight was schooled by Riley Masters of all people this year!! Riley Masters!! Think about the level below Masters and thats where Knight is..
Threads like these are what makes this site simultaneously glorious and shitty. Grant Fisher is not even done with his collegiate running career, after a stellar runner up finish on Saturday, and some are suggesting he has failed to live up to some made up standard of success.
He lost by half a second, big deal? He may not be a Galen Rupp or an Edward Cheserek but he has a national title to his name and is primed to be a favorite in track this winter and spring. He’s also not a pure distance guy like the aforementioned and excels more on the track judging by his performances, but runner up at XC is no laughing matter.
Let’s at least wait til he’s done at Stanford before coming to any serious conclusions
